| | | UE Basic Equipment... < on 3/10/2008 2:30 AM >
| | | In the last few months i've run into a few UE who are ill-equiped for night time exploring. One guy was using his cel-phone as a light and his friend was using the flash from his camera. Another guy had his trusty "dollar store" flash light and batteries die. A guy wearing sandals in an old building stomping around stirring up dust without a dust-mask! So for the people who dont know, heres a few of the basic things you shouldn't explore without: -Quality Flashlight w/ fresh batteries: dont be cheep now! go to Home Depot, spend $30 on a decent flashlight and duracell batteries! "MAGLITE" makes great flashlights, the 3 "D-cell" flashlight provides a good quality light, its not too heavy and it can also be used for personal protection! -Decent Footwear: a thick sole with a good tread work boots are your best bet. -Dust mask: Home Depot $10, don't buy dollar store for dust-masks... -Work gloves: w/ leather palms... Home Depot $5 -Cell phone -a good Multi-tool or Swiss Army style pocket knive -long pants even in the summer, but dress for the weather... -digital camera -bottle of water -extra batteries * Don't buy your equipment from the dollar store! You should eat a proper meal before you go exploring, tell someone where your going and when you'll be back and this probably isn't the best time for drinking or doing drugs! This list is "only" the basic gear you should carry! I also carry a decent digital camera, collapsable tripod and a 1,000,000 candle power flood light for back-lighting while taking pictures. If i've missed anything or you've got your own suggestions on basic equipment please post!

| | | Um, yeah. Thanks for the education. I'm sure there are lots of people on here who really appreciate your advice. Also: Is there anywhere I can see your 1,000,000 candle power, back-lit photos? A link to a gallery, or a location posting would be awesome.

| | | Cool! Though I kinda prefer to travel light, myself... Just personal preference, I guess. *shrugs* Too much gear tends to get heavy and confusing, lol. Unless I know I'm gonna need something specific for a special situation, I prefer to just stick with camera (with extra batteries), gloves, water (incredibly important), flashlight... (Home Depot sells a funky flashlight that has three "legs" that fold out to make a tripod. Good as either a steady light source, or as a makeshift camera tripod.) Lots of equipment can rattle and clang and make noise too. And the extra bulk can sort of inhibit the, uh... unconventional physical movement (???) that's sometimes required. (I ain't never seen no ninja with a hockey bag full of floodlights, fans, and half a hardware store...) P.S.: Also thought of maybe carrying a couple of printed shots of cool places visited in the past... Just in case of a hypothetical run-in with the authorities. Then you can sort of show what you're doing there, and "prove" that you have only benign, artistic intentions?)

That's a pretty useful idea, I do that and lots of people I've hung out with do as well.

| | | Cool pictures. But I'm sure you're really careful about using such powerful lighting in only really safe & obscure places, where you know there's no security, and no chance of being busted. A million candlepower flashing around (especially at night) is a sure way to alert folks of your presence, I'm sure.

I hear that the google is really easy these days. But since you're lazy, and I'm feeling generous... Wikipedia: In the context of lighting design, backlighting refers to the process of illuminating the subject from the back. In other words, the lighting instrument and the viewer are facing towards each other, with the subject in between. This causes the edges of the subject to glow, while the other areas remain darker. The back light is usually placed directly behind the subject in a 4-point lighting setup. A back light, which lights foreground elements from the rear, is not to be confused with a background light, which lights background elements (such as scenery). Summary: In backlighting, there is a light somewhere behind the subject, that is pointed ** AT ** the camera. This describes the lighting in exactly none of the photographs posted to this thread. The best that's managed is a bit of sidelighting in one of logtec's shots. Sorry, fail. And yeah, Rookie Forum maybe?

| | | OK... SORRY! Were not all "pro-stars" here! I'm not a professional photographer, i dont know all the proper terminology! Not everyone has countless hours to stare at a computer screen drooling, then getting a lil tingle in their pants when you find that someone has made a minor mistake! Back-lite... Back-ground-light... Back-light... whatever, the point is- LIGHT "back" or "behind" - "me" or "the subject" it doesn't matter! I'm sure if you came to work with me for a day, i could easily have you confused with trade names or industry terminology! in the field there is no google or wikipedia to bail YOU out, i would laugh a lil, but i still wouldn't publicly bash you for it! I understand you dont like us "newcomers" or "rookies" and haha lets poke fun at them from the SAFETY of our computers... if we were exploring a "location" together it would be a different story, it wouldn't be about who has more time on a computer or who has had the internet longer... "it would just be sharing a common interest"! If they didn't let new people joint this site it wouldn't be what it is today! * REMEMBER YOU WERE ALL NEW TO THIS SITE AT ONE POINT! * Just cuz were new to this site doesn't mean were new to the concept of urban exploring, which is the whole point of this site... isn't it?
