It's definitely some high-end computer equipment from the '70s. Looking again, the slot at the left looks like it may have had paper tape capability, too. Pix from Wikipedia: Those holes are roughly a tenth of an inch apart, so paper tape could hold a little over a letter an inch. As Wikipedia understates, "Datasets much larger than a few dozen kilobytes are impractical to handle in paper tape format." I never actually used paper tape for coding -- I got started with the TRS-80 -- but when I was a kid my dad showed me the punching machine at the FAA radar site where he worked.
