| | | I finally made it into this place... < on 2/21/2008 8:23 AM >
| | | I've been wanting to access and shoot this site for months now, but I'd been trying to go about it legally. Well, Monday night I finally got tired of all the unreturned phone calls, and with a nice, nearly full moon, went in the old fashioned way. I liked it so much, I went back Tuesday night as well. Here are a few shots; I have many, many more that I'll be posting over the coming weeks to my Flickr site: http://www.flickr.com/photos/nkerns/

| | | Well, those pictures kill man, great eye. As far as the entry into the site, it's probably the easiest site on the face of the earth to get into. Even though the guys from Prison Break are there, it's still extremely accessible.

| | | I don't know that I've ever heard a story from someone who got the OK to explore a site ahead of time. I think the old axiom applies: "It's easier to ask forgiveness than to ask permission." To which we should probably add, "But it's even easier if you don't get caught in the first place."

| | | hey just had a look at some of your stuff on Flickr, have you ever looked at Gregory Crewdsons photography (he's my favourite), kind of reminded me of his stuff. He did the stills for Six Feet Under.

| | | RobertB - Actually, I explored an old hotel about a month ago in west Texas where I prearranged with some municipal officials to gain access to the site. I made it clear that it wasn't just a random urbex thing though, they were wary of that. I showed them some samples of my work and they were excited to let me in! knickers - Haven't heard of him; I'll have to check him out!

Absolutely. It's always best to get permission, especially when there's security, what with the strobes and flashlights that I use. My original plan was for much more large scale light painting using multiple assistants to paint multiple areas simultaneously in the same shot, but now with security onsite, that plan has gone by the wayside...since I don't have permitted access.

Interesting... thanks for the perspective! Back to the pix. It looks like you caught a satellite track in the first photo! It's about the brightness of the brightest stars visible in the pic. I don't think it's an airplane, because it's a single point and also because of the way the path is curved. See heavens-above.com for more info on watching satellites (spy and otherwise) go overhead.

| | | No, in all seriousness, really killer shots! Also, on a side note, Fox just decided they are moving Prison Break back to LA. Therefore, the site will be empty again shortly, but I hear that the city of Fort Worth is going to tear them down.

| | | I saw on the news about 6 months ago that after Prison Break was done filming, they were going to demolish A&S to make way for hotels.

| | | Thanks everyone. Yeah, the rumor about the impending demolition of this site was the tipping point for me to decide to stop waiting for callbacks and just do it. No way was I gonna let this place get away without shooting it first. I shot it 3 nights this past full moon, and if they tore it down tomorrow I could live with it. But I'd like to shoot it again a time or two before she's gone; still have a couple ideas.

| | | There should be more abandonments coming soon, as The T (FW city bus) continues to move forward with plans for a commuter rail line from SW FW to Grapevine via the Stockyards area. Check this thread at dallasmetropolis: here, and scroll down to the posting with the station layouts. Several of the northside stations are in currently occupied locations -- like "Proposed North Side Station - LPA Option A", currently the site of a large warehouse (according to this Google aerial shot). A lot of ab's in Dallas, created by the Green Line LRT expansion, appear to have gone unexplored before their demolition. Hope that doesn't happen in FW.

| | | RobertB - Good tips...thanks! I've never gotten quite that deep into research myself, to actually predict impending abandonments, but it makes perfect sense.
