I suggest that we continue this discussion in the photography thread. As for lenses for the Canon's being cheaper, it's actually exactly flipped. The really high end lenses to be cheaper if they are Nikons. As for the cameras the quality is similar, but Nikon's generally have a better and easier to use user interface. There is a reason they are the number one DSLR camera manufacture in the world! Then again that is only a temporary thing, as technology advances the cameras will get better and canon could beat out Nikon. At the end of the day it all depends on what you want out of the camera. It's all about how it feels and how it works for you.

and the dead beat canon vs nikon horse lives on.............hooray!

I'm curious why you would say that.

Shooting with a dslr - I find the cost effectiveness makes it easier to shoot a higher volume of photos which translates to more (cherry) shots I value overall.

Several photographers I know who've progressed from film to dslr's have said shooting digital helps remove that shutter button hesitation they had with film. That moment of uncertainty when you hesitate on a shot...wondering if its a waste of a comparatively more expensive film frame.

I see where you're coming from. I feel that when shooting film, you have a set number of photos you can shoot. You really don't want to mess any of them up. I realize that you never want to mess a photo up, but with digital you can have as many tries as you want until you get the shot perfect. The way I look at it film is a lot more "do or die" as with digital you have the option of retrying. All I'm trying to say is that with film, that shutter hesitation can lead to some better shots. Both forms(Digital/Film) help to make you a better photographer, but it just comes down to which method you prefer.

I'm not anti-digital in any way, that's just the way I see it.

I have a pentax MX which is a bit higher end than yours but almost the same body and the same era. PM if you need any help or have any questions. Just out of curiosity

1. What kind of lenses do you have?
2. What kind of film do you have

The reason I ask is because I (we) can probably be of help in telling you what lenses will good for certain situations and what film you should look at getting. As for film, your probably looking at about 5 bucks a roll for processing and then prints which run anywhere from 30 cents to several dollars each depending on size. Less if you do it yourself (which is way more fun and satisfying overall).

Awesome! My first camera was a K1000. I now have 2 of them...and 2 Spotmatics....and 2 MX bodies as well. oh and more than enough lenses as well....which is a lie because I will never have enough glass.

Someone said something about auto settings and I laughed. The K1000 is fully manual and a great learning tool indeed. I actually started off Using a K1000 with a mediocre 50mm and a spotmatic with absolutely fantastic super takumar lenses. Mainly I abused my K1000 and used it as a light meter for my spotmatic which had no battery....

AAAAAAAnyways, pretty much all that need be said has been said. As for lenses, I'd stick with primes for awhile if you have any zoom lenses, don't bother with them yet. I'd say take a 50 and a 28 out with you and keep composition in mind and just try to get used to the operation of the camera. If you ever go digital you will no doubt mis the sound of that shutter, I know I do.

As for you guys and your nikon canon debate.....kid has a pentax film slr......now let's not forget that Pentax makes Digital bodies too. The only area they really lack any excellent functionality in is sports photography, and silly wildlife photography like on safari because they don't have honkin telephoto lenses available. I have a K10D and as far as comfort, it is the most pleasant thing in my hands, and I have held them all. You buy into a line of lenses really with any camera, and pentax allows you to use any of their lenses on their digital bodies and they work quite well, in fact my old film lenses meter better than my digital lens.......bleh!

So, and afterthought to all this nonsense I guess is if you ever decide to got digital, all those nice lenses will work great on a pentax digital SLR.

Hey yeah you, fat ass. Not interested.

If I were to provide a list of lenses that I have, do you think that you could tell me if they are any good?

Of course. Really for general purposes, I can't think of a really BAD lens from Pentax. But, yeah, by all means shoot me a list via PM or here, or whatever =P

I have the screwmount version of your camera. I think for UE photos, a good tripod is essential.

The 50 and the 55 are the best ones on there from what I can see. I'd experiment with those first.

When I got the cameras and lenses from the pawnshop, it came with a K-mount adapter...which is good because the Auto Tamron was a screw mount. And yes, I have a tripod. A mediocure tripod, but still a tripod.

Good advise, those other ones way a ton! So which 50's/55's should I be more concerned with?

Okay, another question: My Pentax has a button cell battery in the bottom of it...but I thought it was a manual camera. What's the battery for, triggering the flash?

It's for light metering.

If you want to get better at shooting manual, gr8fzy1, I suggest just going out and seeing what works and what doesn't. I had a tough time at first. My first roll was complete and utter crap, but you do learn a lot from the rolls you mess up.

So just get out there and try! You'll get the hang of it eventually.
