The past few weeks I've been dabbling with my new Nikon D70s camera.

I am shooting with a 70-300mm lens, and am just getting into photography. I am not very knowledgable when it comes to cameras, but I try my best (that's all that counts, right?

Here is just a snibbet of the past few weeks worth of exploring. Please let me know how to improve, and please use small words (i'm a beginner!)

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop...

Here is number eight, post-rotation

Alright, WTF.

I rotated it in photobucket and it shows up that way on their website, but not on here.

Stumped.

hmm... ok, first, use a tripod, second, never use a flash ever... it kills any photograph, third take your time on every picture you take, fourth learn to process your photos.

Tripod was in the back of my truck, although I've been told if my shutter speed is fast enough I wouldn't need a tripod (correct me if I'm wrong)

Also, I haven't done anything to process any of the photos. I just downloaded GIMP, but am slowly struggling through it.

Thanks for the comnents?

I hold no responsibility for the comments made yesterday on your photos haha. Someone used my computer and didn't realize it was logged in as me.

But you do need to get friendly with the tripod, even if you think the shutter speed is good. I'm just getting better about using mine because I'm lazy and prefer to just shoot without the hindrance but it makes a HUGE difference.

If you're going to process your photos, seriously invest in Photoshop, even if it's just Elements. I use Elements because it's basic and I have very little patience for complex programs. You'll like it.

And yeah, don't use a flash. It burns out your photos. Otherwise, I like the composition, just try to get more of the surroundings in the photo rather than just focusing on the person in the shot.

Well thank you...

Personally, I like number two the best... I only wish it didn't have so much asbestos dust on the shot

Im with theAMA, dont use flash!! It ruins photos and gets the dusty orbs in the picture. Get used to using the manual mode and adjusting the settings instead of AUTO. It takes a while to get used to it but its much better this way. Oh yeah, use a tripod too. Otherwise, good shots

Hmm -
I like alot of your composition -
but there are a few things that stand out to me -

you are using very fast shutter speeds and very high ISO
settings -

the first photo shows grainyness and speckeling associated
with high ISO - like ISO 800 and over -

it looks liek you are doing all hand held photography
with these settings (if you will do so make sure to
check your manual and settings to make sure the "noise reduction"
setting is on) it will help with the blurr and grain of high ISO.

Also most of these shots are very very bright and "blown out"
(too much light washing out colors and hue)
if you want to shoot photos which will have more depth and be less blown out - try to stay around 100 or 200.

this will require you to use longer shutter speeds and use a tripod.
but in the end this is where the fun begins.
you have a great camera - now switch it off the "auto" mode to M for manual and start shooting smarter and not quick and dirty.

here are a few examples of loner exposures - taken with my
Nikon d40 and a simple 18-55mm Nikor lens.

http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=52504

give that a try and let me know how you did.

oh and never ever use a flash ! never! - forget the camera even has one
there are uses for a flash - but that come after you start taking more pictures and less "snap shots".

to summarize -

1. lower your ISO to 100 - 200
2. Bring your shutter speed down (cause with lower ISO
you'll need to)
3. Use a tripod!
4. Take your time and compose a shot then take it.
5. Processing is all well and good - but if the shot was
crap to begin with - you won't save it in photoshop.

Mobian: Great advice. I have to second the comment on not using a flash. The built in flash on a camera is almost guaranteed to make anything look terrible.

Any kind of low-light situation is going to require a tripod if you want to stop using a flash and not have grainy photos. It was a big change for me to move to a tripod, but once you get used to it, you'll love it.

Keep taking photos! That's the most important thing. Experiment with your camera, with your angles, with your composition. Think through the photo before you take it. Try standing in different places to look at the same thing. Sometimes going from standing to crouching can help me suddenly see a better way to take the photo.
Cheers,

true, built in flashes always blow for some reason -
you'd have to invest in a professional style flash.

and Freeside is absoultly right - keep shooting
and experiment.
