Sirenity

A drain in Wolverhampton, UK.

Shot on Nikon d70s, 18-55 lens, mostly between f5 and f10, 20 to 30 second exposures, iso 300 - 500. Apologies for 850 pixel width images . .

1.

Single light source, Fenix P3 flashlight.

2.

Flash.

3.

Diffused flashlight, flash gun and fluorescent tube light.

Third pic is a bit odd as the st00p(person in shot) looks like a photochopped in addition but was very much there when I took the pic. Strange outline effect caused by something or other?

number 2 is little bright for me, the highlight on the wall is distracting, and the empty space on the left side of three draws your eye away from everything else. Other than that, these are very nice; The lighting's different from what i'm used to seeing for drain pictures, I like it.

Awesome!! These long-exposure-silky-smooth water shots are waaaaay cooler than any nature photo of a river. People commented that they seemed bright for a drain, but this is a by-product of long exposures, "n'est pas"?

As for pic 3... You were trying to figure out what gives him that "pasted in" look? How much noise reduction and sharpening are you doing? Maybe something went 'boink' at that stage?

Would love to see more long exposed drain pics.

I think it must just have been the slight movement of st00p and the lighting set up combined to create this odd 'outlined' look to the figure. I don't have noise reduction turned on due to the annoying lengthening of processing time it creates, and I hadn't done any sharpening in post, it had the same pasted in look when taken, just a random one I guess, bet I couldn't re-create it

These are all actually very nicely lit, it's odd to see an evenly lit drain. Maybe I'll try that sometime...

Two critiques: first, it's serenity. Second, the last one, aside from the weird pasted-in look (shooting jpeg? The in-camera sharpening might be responsible; otherwise it's a fluke). The problem I have is the pose. It's a little, well, naughty. Y'know, with the flying drops of...whatever. I know, I know, he's just holding the light source, but maybe not in the crotch region next time.

Other than that, very nice lighting job. It's an approach to drain lighting I haven't seen much before, and you pulled it off rather well.

*Edit: my apologies if that is the intended spelling. Also, are these the ones you weren't sure about? There's a few other really nice ones on the draining board thread.

Siren + Serenity = Sirenity (we were struggling with a name)

LOL, yeah. Silo pointed out the same on the drainers board, named due to the drain being a shameless flirt, luring you onwards with the sound of crashing water and the distant glimmer of something of interest as your torch light flicked across it; and although it was really very serene there was the sense that we were being lured toward an untimely end at the bottom of a dropshaft or something similar! LOL!

Yeah, st00p wasn't best pleased with this or any of the poses he was captured in that day! LOL! I see your point, thankfully we can't see his though.

Kinda, I like the first one but st00p suggested it might look better cropped a little tighter to loose the dark edges so I thought I'd see if that was anyone elses suggestion. Second one I like the tunnel and the water, just not certain about the wall far left so thought I'd post. Third was just the whole odd outline business I was intrigued about, I think it might just have ben a freak one off as I've never had it happen previous.

I love the pictures. Especially number one...

I have a D70s as well, and am just getting into photography and still learning to use my camera.

I have been using the "Auto" setting for pretty much everything and have been shooting with a HUGE lens (70mm-300mm)

Any advice for me?

There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop...

Ah, went back and read actually read the thread, I get it now. I knew you two were smarter than that. By which I mean smarter than me. My problem is I look at the pics in the drainer's forum, and catch up on actually reading them maybe twice a week.

I'd actually like a little more dark edge at the top, and I think it looks a bit off without the top. Second one, yeah, blown highlights, blah blah blah, that's just something people are taught to watch out for, and people here tend to really harp on and on about them. They don't really matter, as long as the blown-out parts don't overpower the main subject, which they don't. The third one is weird, yes - weird like a fox. Was it jpeg or raw?

yep.

I was raised watching The Young Ones and Bottom innuendo extravaganza comedy, LOL!

It indeed was .jpg, and I shall have to have a look see now what the camera is set to r.e. any sharpening etc, I don't think I have ever touched it tbh.

Yeah, the whited out areas thing I have seen jumped on quite often, I have kept it in mind but not so much a hard and fast rule, rather something that sometimes can be beneficial, sometimes not. If photography was a set of rules you had to adhere to then we'd surely all be taking outstanding pics reducing things to a technical process devoid of creativity?
