| | | | make your own (canon) camera remote < on 1/21/2008 3:04 AM >
| | | This website shows yo how to make a remote that will work on most canon dslr's for less than $10 http://www.covingt.../CanonRelease.html heres mine:
I got the toggle switch and the connector at radio shack for like 5 bucks, the button and the phone cord i had laying around. I left out the auto focus feature because I only had one button, but the wiring is there for me to add it later. [last edit 1/21/2008 3:12 AM by musket boy - edited 1 times]

| | | I've built a similar one. It works great. Turn on mirror lockup, and use a remote, absolutely no shake in your pictures.
I'm spinning counter-clockwise, each turn robs the planet of angular momentum, slowing its spin the tiniest bit, lengthening the night, pushing back the dawn, giving me a little more time here with you. |

| | | I built one, and mounted it inside of a pen, It even has a retractable cord! It's amazing the "suicide bomber" feel you can get out of stuff lying around your basement.

| | | This is a good, worthwhile way to save some bucks if you have the skill and time to do so. The store bought ones tend to be overpriced, especially the cables! An excellent thread MB [last edit 1/29/2008 4:47 AM by blackhawk - edited 1 times]

| | | Hey, For canon Point and Shoot cameras, you should take a look at CHDK, its an add on to the firmware which allows you to not only run scripts and use a remote, but also change exposure and ISO settings. You can even take high speed photography shots. http://chdk.wikia.com/wiki/FAQ Here are some photos i took with the updated firmware on a canon A610 http://getdropbox....y/3108/0/?h=7fc197 -- Will

| | | For a nom-diy option, I would also have a look at the Canon RC-1 remote. Pretty cheap, small enough to attach to the strap where it is always handy, and lets you fire the shutter either instantly or after a 2 sec delay. The only real downside I have found is that it dosen't have a huge range, but for the price and size it is a handy wee bit to have in the camera bag (or on the camera strap) [last edit 4/8/2008 8:14 PM by Narcosynthesis - edited 1 times]

It works really well. I recommend the AllBest build, and make sure to read the FAQ. I found it by reading popular science. Here are some Pics i took with it: http://www.getdrop...y/3108/0/?h=7fc197 If you have any q's about it, feel free to drop me a pm.

| | | I'm running CHDK on my S5, and I would highly recommend it! It was reasonably simple to install and there are no permanent effects to the camera itself. I love being able to shoot RAW with a point and shoot!

Well it could override any programmed safety protocols programmed into the camera's software. Ultimate performance is going to be limited by the image sensor (not sure which is used, and if all of it's outputs are physically connected), is the camera RAM on the Digic II processor? I don't think so, so it might have over effects as well. The Digic II processor does have powerful features that are not enable on the PS cameras, but will the OTHER IC and Pics (these are not effected by outside software, they are hard burned) in the camera fully support CHDK? The P&S models may well be missing needed PIC flashes and other components to make these advanced functions on the DigicII work properly. I would research it well, and use it with caution. It will void camera warranty as well. Canon maybe be able to detect it was used even though it's not altering the firmware flash, and may refuse to service it. I've not heard of this, but this does open a whole new can of worms, and some of them could be bad. http://www.dpreview.com/forums/ (you'll need to log on; search for CHDK, many threads about it on this site) http://digitalphot...ort-to-a-canon-g7/ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DIGIC_II [last edit 4/11/2008 3:51 PM by blackhawk - edited 1 times]

And it doesn't arouse suspicion with the TSA folks like this contraption would. Hehe, trying explaining that with 50 people in line behind you in airport security.
