you can get a 4-d at costco for 20 bucks, and it comes with a mini. I'd say that the 6-d is worth that price.

i've carried the 2aa mini mag for several years every day. replaced the bulb with three leds aftermarket, which you can now get standard NIB, and it's all ive really needed unless i was crawling, then a headlamp comes in handy.

Same here. Although I would love the power of some of the larger ones at times, but hate the size. The 2AA allows me to walk up to a building with less of a "Hey, look at me!" sign than having a 3D mag tucked in my sleeve.

That's fine if you're trying to light up in front of you. No Fenix comes even close to a 6D mag with a xenon lamp in a long-distance beam.

I have a streamlight twin task (which is basically a 1 x cr123 li) light and it has both xenon and led.

Pretty useful until you realize it lasts for about 3 hours on a $6 battery. It also gets very very hot -- I only paid $20 for it so I'm not gonna complain but it puts a 3 C and a 2 D maglite I have to shame. The 2 D while is father reaching (only slightly)-- it falls off almost immediately and its not as practical as having a light you can stick in your pocket. I'd recommend this product by the same company, I've tried in a surplus store and its way better then a maglite, for basically $10 more.

I tried out several lights at a shop here, and found this one to be the brightest.

Edit : Link change

As for carrying a 6d maglite, I'm reminded of all the 'macho' guys at my work who thought carrying that light around made them more manly.

Overcompensation, anyone?

I have a 3-cell D maglite and replaced the bulb with one of their LED "upgrades"

http://www.maglite.com/LED_Mod.asp

It's a pretty nice bulb, quite bright, not to mention the battery lasts longer

Good stuff...how's the color though; is it that flat, bluish color?

These people pretty much agree. Some F e ni x have more output, like a hose without any attachment, but Mag 6D in comparison has less output, but more like a hose with a jet nozzle and lights up far away.

The warranty on Mag is better too.
Lifetime on Mag vs 1 year on F e ni x

i find the led surefire g2 is worth the investment, the reg bulb ones were great but got very hot, had very bad battery life, and the batteries were expensive. the led version is only $20 more and is actually brighter (80 lumens up from 60) and the battery life is great (something around 60 up from 2) so if you got $60 laying around i would get one.

a little OT, but didn't want to dedicate a new thread:

I used to have 3 mini maglites, the 2 AA size with regular bulb, and I liked their ruggedness a lot, nice spare bulb etc.

after losing the 3rd one, I got a 2 AA LED mini mag.

This thing has some kind of design problem / manufacture flaw or something, because it does not work reliably !

I have sent it back to Mag Instrument twice, they have returned it both times saying "no problem found". But the simple fact is, that it does not always work as it should.

I think it is something in the LED assembly... who knows.

It seems to be working again lately, but I really don't trust it.

For the money, you'd probably be better getting multiple Fenix lights, or other similar mag lite style copies...

Weird. You mean it's not consistently bright enough, or it just flat-out stops working?

I've never had a problem with my MiniMagLED. It's the only flashlight I take exploring.

I bought a 6D Maglite knockoff from DealExtreme (Hong Kong site) a while back.
It looks absolutely ridiculous...however it's *very* bright (Xenon bulb) and pretty cheap ($16 AUD). All I need to do is fix a battery contact issue (using some rare earth magnets to improve contact) and there's my draining torch all set.
