This week I was having a business meeting nearby El Toro and couldn't resist making a visit. I couldnt find the "easy" way to drive on that others have referred to here, so I resorted to talking my way past the police checkpoint on Perimeter Road and then drove around the base for an hour or so (sadly, without camera).

The base is in fact being redeveloped by Great American Parks or some such -- there will be housing and multi-purpose plots. The better part of the runway system is being used by AMCI for testing cars, and something like a thousand RV's are being stored along the North end of the runway system.

Many of the old buildings and hangars are easily accessible and I did so with great enjoyment. The old control tower building is the only one I noted to have locked gates and barbed wire. Several buildings at the West end of the base are used by Irvine PD for their SWAT Team -- which explains the 9mm marker bullet casings someone took pictures of.

While I was poking around one of these SWAT buildings, an Irvine PD truck pulled up and I was questioned and had to present my credentials. The officer escorted me back to the checkpoint, where I used the "photographer scouting locations" story and proceeded to get all the contact information and permissions to set up a legitimate site visit (if anyone wants to come with me and do a legitimate photoshoot, send me a message).

I was told that, with proper authorization, I'd be free to have the run of the place and take whatever pictures I wanted wherever I wanted.

As an FYI, I noted Irvine PD has posted a half dozen patrol vehicles to this site. They patrol day and night.

Freedom breeds war; and Peace, slavery. So it shall be forevermore: Men who love freedom buy it with their lives, and lovers of peace with their freedom.

Dont answer this question. His avatar looks like the guy who sits inside the police booth by the theater.

Sneaky avatars aside, I'd be very interested in joining you for a visit, even if I can't photograph worth shit. Let me know if something comes up.
