They are not bad per say, just missing something. Resize, bump contrast and maybe some lens correction on #1 and you will be on the right track. Exploring is like tattoos... Also, number 2 lacks compositional interest. I think its a pretty good rule not to put your subject smack center if there are no major directional forces around it. That being said, good for you for trying to go fully manual. its hard stuff.
