Confederate Flag boy? Well I got a Nikon D40 and already took shots with it, and when I came out of mass today fog just swept over the area so I grabbed my camera to get practice. This is my second set with my first DSLR, this is the second set http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=51448

It's not the fog, or a car window causing the pictures to be out of focus. The camera is just plainly out of focus. Not something I personally would have posted, especailly in critique dude. Sorry, but there isn't anything good to say about these. Might want to invest in a tripod.

why do you think I posted these. I don't care if they are good, I just need to know what to do in order for them to be nice. The camera was in focus during the time these pictures were taken.

I normally don't give my opinion in critique since I am far from a professional, but I have to on this one.

I pretty much agree with what everyone here is saying. The shots are out of focus, the settings on your Nikon were obviously not correct and they're all crooked.

Don't be offended, this is constructive criticism here, but I'm sure you can look at these pictures and see that they're not that great, right? These don't look like pictures that should ever come off of a Nikon, imo. I think if you got out of the car, set the camera on a tripod to steady it while you took your shot and read your manual and figured out what settings you need to use, these shots (especially the last one) would have the potential to be decent shots.

It took me awhile to get the hang of my Nikon. When I first got it, it took awhile for me to make the connection that a tripod would hold my camera still on those long exposure shots and that holding the camera still made for very crisp, clear pictures. I've had my Nikon for over a year now, and I'm still learning about it every time I use it.

There is a lot to learn so just keep messing around with it, read up on it, search the web for other users of the same camera and see what they've done to get good shots, etc... I think in time you'll look back on these pictures and see a lot of improvement.

Thank you, at least someone offered advise. Yes I know that they aren't the best, but that is why I posted them, I wanted to find out how to make them better.

If the camera was in focus, then the only other explanation was that were doing a long exposure freehand without a tripod.

As for your second set, much better, but you really have to work on setting up your shot. You own an SLR now, don't think of it as a point and shoot. Take the time to set up the shot. Work on your composition.

Keep in my, in your original post you didn't once state you knew they needed work, nor did you ASK for advice on how to better them. As it stands you posted these in CRITIQUE. If you have specific questions on what you should do to better yourself, make a point to state that in your original post next time for a more detailed reply.

True I never noticed that, I am not in this board much. Could the reason that it looks out of focus is because of the fog?

Most likely you had your camera on the friendly setting. So it figured since it was dark it need to slow down the shutter speed. You most likely not realizing this neglected to use a tripod.

It was the darkness in general, on auto as mentioned already, your camera slowed down the shutter speed and I assume you were taking the picture free hand, hence, movement = focal problems. Get a tripod, a must by far.

Start trying to do it in manual exposure and with manual color balance. You'll learn the relationships with exposure, color and apeture a hell of a lot faster that way. Try using manual focus on an older camera if you can get it to understand focus.

These photos are for lack of a better word, horrible. There's nothing redeeming about them. They have. . . .nothing in them to comment on. You might as well have posted transparent gifs in 800x600 and invoked the same amount of thought. As an image goes it's basically an absence of an image.

Look into the photography section of the library and start figuring out what you like and why. Then with your newfound understanding of exposure/apeture/color try to do something in that style. Don't do straight copys lest you want to make inferior ansel adam knockoffs.

And for gods sake, don't try to learn photoshop first.
