| | | There are so many photographic subjects on this 500ft ship, it's hard to choose what to shoot. Here's two scenes I really liked. Please critique. #1: Wide angle lens, desaturated except for the red, obviously. There weren't any compelling colors in this shot so I drained em out. Lit with a hand held Krypton flashlight. My first time experimenting with this technique.
#2: Huge engine room on this steam ship. I crawled into a little out of the way storage area and found this. Lit with a hand held Krypton flashlight.
Thanks, -free

| | | i think these are both great. some people might argue that theres a lot of dead space on the bottom in the first picture but i would disagree. i think both of these images are pretty awesome. good job.

I'm still processing the shoot. I'll post them up soon. How's the B&W treatment? too contrasty, too harsh? Or is it good? I do so little B&W that I don't really know what is appealing to the eye. Could use some feedback on this.

| | | Here's another. It might not look it, but this was a very difficult shot to get. There was very little space to take the photo so I had to use a wide angle lens to even get the whole board, and there was shiny paint all over the control panel that made lighting it without reflections next to impossible. This was my 13th photo in a row of this panel, and I finally got the lighting figured out. This engine room is 95% intact, with tools still laying around, notes still on the board from the last watch. This is one of the few spots where things have gone missing. The ship was built in 1939 and there are still some gauges around that are originals. Enjoy, and critique please if you see room for improvement! | | | Oh yeah, I know what it's like taking a hundred pictures of the same little thing trying to figure it out. God bless digital photography. And yet always my first is the best and the others suck. I really like your first photo. There's no way I'd say there's too much dead space, but in the second photo you might make that case. I like the subject and I don't think it would look better if you shot it straight on, but all the lines take away from it for me a little.

| | | The first one, while very good, doesn't feel wide angle. I'd like to see what it would look like if you got a bit closer to the wires, if they'd feel like they were encompassing the viewer. The second one is very well lit. I'd say you've already got a good handle on that lighting technique. A good rule of thumb for black and white: If you think it's appealing, it probably is. Also as another rule of thumb for black and white (that can, and should be broken if the rule doesn't work for you) is that there should be a nice balance between dark areas, light areas and mid-greys.

Ah. Ok. Here's another couple: #4
storage cubbies in the engineering parts and storage area on the Art Ship. I'm undecided on this picture. I really liked it when I was on the ship but now I'm not sure... And yes, I did put that hard hat there. Found it just around the corner. Cropped to remove shiny sections of the picture where my flashlight reflected off the black paint. Total darkness, lit with hand held Krypton and head mount LED flashlights. #5
quick light painting job on an interesting pipe tree and gauges. I am quite fond of this picture.

| | | I really like the first one. However I think maybe the desaturated parts shouldn't be completely desaturated. I like the idea of the red being brighter but I think it may look better just dulling down the rest of the colors, not completely removing them.

This is great feedback. The total desaturation looked a little harsh to me. I'll try bleeding out color but not completely. Thanks.
