It was completely black outside and I had just enough time to fill in the light. My camera remote is missing so I only had 30 seconds to do it

1. Very nice. Great lighting. I wouldn't change a thing. Only complaint is that the footprints take away some of the mystery, but what can you do?

2. Looks pretty unbalanced. The huge black area doesn't add much either. Try to see if there are any details in there that can be pulled out to help give things a bit more definition.

3. Does nothing for me. I don't really get what you're trying to show with this one. Again, the dark areas add nothing.

4. I like this one a log, but the rooftop could use a bit more definition to help give things a bit more pop.

5. This is like #1's evil twin brother. Too much light, awkward composition, with nothing left to the imagination. Plus, everytime you move a piece of furniture like that, Urbex Jesus cries.

Very hit and miss here, but thats how it goes with this stuff.

1 is GORGEOUS. Love it...love the snow, love the light, love the surreal feeling....perfect.

4 is also gorgeous but you should have painted the outside of the house for a just a touch of shadow detail. The shot is SO great, but you really need that shadow detail in this case...it would make the shot and it's not quite there without it. Brilliant idea though and execution is sooooo very close.

3 is no good. 2 the subject is a bit blah. The last one is decent but the lighting isn't quite right.

Very good stuff. Don't mean to be overly critical since this stuff is real tricky and you did a great job, but edit yourself a little more...I mean 3? Come on. Keep trying...you've got a talent for this.

Thanks for the advice. I really do need to work harder at getting the shots right... but man, it's too damn cold out now! I went out tonight to do some more stuff and my camera's battery couldn't take it. I only got a few pictures in before I had to call it a night certainly more to come in the future though.

Nah you're doing great dude. These are a really good start. Night shooting can be tough to improve upon because each shot takes....so....fucking...long. You're totally thinking in the right direction and doing good things. Just keep at it.

the time doesnt bother me....its focusing in the fucking dark that is so hard for me. take 4 for example. i would have to shine a bright ass light on the house, hold down the shutter button halfway, flip to manual focus, release button and then take the shot.

ugh

Agreed that number 4 is awesome! Keep working on that technique!

Were you using a flashlight or firing an off camera flash? The shadows are nice and crisp and clean which makes me feel like you popped off a couple flashes.

Thanks! I use all flashlight work. I usually carry with me several flashlights. My favorite one is a white LED torch made by Reactor. It's really nice and was pretty cheap too . I agree with Nomeus totally. Focusing and framing are the toughest part of getting the shot right. It's really, really hard to frame a night shot unless you have a floodlight. And focusing often requires me either measuring how far the object is from my lens, illuminating something straight in front of the focus points, or placing a flashlight on the ground in front of the camera that I focus on... all very time consuming and tricky.

#4 is nice, but the house needs a bit of light IMO. Reminds me a bit of the photo below >

call me crazy, but I like #4 the way it is. yeah, the house could use more definition, but how can you get it if there is just no light? Now, there is a bit too much shadow in some of the other shots, but even in spite of that the color temperature of the flashlight makes it feel really cold. great work man.

don't talk shit about total
