In fact, no. I found that most gas mask and filters on ebay are obsolete and unsafe. I'm asking this question because there's a site I want to go back and there are so much dust in the air that last time I went I had it in my eyes too, so I'm wondering if it's dangerous or not.

| | | To answer your question though, I wouldn't bother unless you're in really dusty places. Things like grain dust or airborne asbestos fibres might cause short-term eye irritations, but you should be more concerned about the stuff getting in your lungs.

| | | Your average safety glasses aren't really going to help with the dust, they are more useful against flying objects and impact resistance. Actually, it can contribute to the problem. At one of my clients we made workers stop wearing safety glasses because particles of fiber glass in the air would collect on the inside of the lenses, then the next time they looked up it would fall into the eyes. If its really dusty go with some goggles that seal off the eyes; like you would use when working with chemicals.
I become capability. I become the horror. What we know we can become only in our heart of darkness. It's my gift. It's my curse. |

| | | As pezking4 said, safety glasses used with chemicals and liquids are the best protection. They will make a good all around seal about the eyes. If that's not practical, you can bring a Kirby (Dyson's good too, but Hoover sucks!) vacuum and just give the ol' peepers a pass or two if dust/junk gets on them. It works best if you have the eyes open during the vacuuming procedure. If you find it difficult to perform this in the field on yourself, have a good UE buddy do what needs to be done. Happy exploring.

| | | I have the advantage of working at an ambulance base. We have respirators, full face-sheilds, glasses and lots of other goodies not to mention gloves (always wear gloves!) We also have a complete decontamination room with face washes, showers etc just in case I get covered in something while eploring ;)
http://cat.org.au/~predator/approach.txt There is a time when the operation of the machine becomes so odious, makes you so sick at heart, that you can't take part; you can't even passively take part, and you've got to put your bodies upon the gears and upon the wheels, upon the levers, upon all the apparatus, and you've got to make it stop... |
