Forget I-anything. Follow US 77 and SH (former US) 66. Whenever you see a sign with the name of a town and an arrow pointing down a poorly-maintained county road, take it. Get the official Oklahoma map (preferably an out-of-date one) and find ways to get to all the "unincorporated communities" marked with squares instead of circles. And look for places where the new(er) road curves away, but a stretch of 1930s cement continues straight.
You were planning to take a week or so to get to Tulsa, right?

It has pretty good information on a selection of ghost towns (not even close to all of the old towns in Oklahoma are listed) but of course, the book is nearly thirty years old, so many of the ones listed are now gone.
It is particularly useful if old grain towers are your thing. It has some handy-dandy maps, as well.
Of course, I'm a history grad student, so books like this get me all excited. Its the geeky side of me, I can't help it. Anyway, University of Oklahoma Press publishes it so it easy to find in any library.

| | | | There are a few ghost town books in my collection. 2 GREAT Texas ones are, Ghost Towns of Texas and More Ghost Towns of Texas (appropriate), you can get them at Barnes/Noble or Borders. Pretty comprehensive list and directions to the major Ghost Towns all throughout Texas.

| | | | Just an FYI, the Library of Congress online has archives of old maps, etc. available in high resolution for free download. You have to download software to view them (MrSID, etc.) but those are free too. I've got old post office maps from 1871, territory maps from 1802, and official railroad maps from 1886 that have been particularly useful in years past.
You should check it out if you're looking for ghost towns.
