A second set - York Redoubt

Hi again everyone, I'm back with my second group of photos, this time from York Redoubt just outside Halifax. Went out there yesterday with Urbandweller and some classmates of his, had a pretty good photo shoot all in all.

Here are the shots, please be brutal and give me even the smallest most insignificant advice, I need everything I can get.

1:

This is my favourite from the three rolls I shot, though I haven't looked a lot of them for printing yet.
2:

This was my first attempt ever at using a flashlight for a lightsource. It was almost pitch black in here, and my mini-mag seems to have done a pretty good job of lighting things up.

3:

I like this shot, I just wish the sky wasn't such a hotspot. I tried burning the print (for a significant amount of time) but by the time I got the sky with some tonality in it the tops of the trees and tower were way too dark from the burning. Maybe I'll keep playing with it. Also, the horizon line is just a tiny bit off center, I believe, anyone else think so?

4:

5:

Again with the whited out sky.

6:

This one doesn't do much for me. Just seems boring.

These were all shot with a Canon AE-1, using Ilford HP5 400 ASA B&W film, and developed with X-TOL.

Thanks in advance for your help!

[EDIT: I did some more printing from the rolls today, added three more pictures.]

To my eye, the composition on all 3 shots are good, though shot #2 really doesn't do much for me. I see what you mean about the sky in shot #3, though that can be replaced easily enough in Photoshop.

The borders on these shots are much better done than your last set, they're not obese enough to distract the viewer. Also, a minor point, shot 3 does not have a border like the other two have.

I look forward to seeing other shots from the shoot.

With regards to the new shots (4 thru 6)

#4 really speaks to me. It's got class & atmosphere. The fact that you can't see into the entrance really adds to the grimm factor. The debris around the entrance doesn't hurt either.

I'm not a fan of #5 however, the out of focus shrubbery in the foreground really distracts my eye. Perhaps holding it out of the way or clipping it before shooting would have yielded better results. The overexposed sky doesn't really bug me that much on this one though.

Shot 6 is exposed well enough, but I agree, it doesn't do much for me either. Maybe try having some fun with it in Photoshop, see what you can make from it.
