Is there anyone here that has ever done much exploration underneath Tokyo? Aside from the subways, there are also cavernous flood prevention areas. There is also a book written in Japanese that hints at massive underground structures that aren't on most maps, including separate subway lines and parking areas.

Is there anyone in the Tokyo area that can back this up for me? If I could find some evidence of good UE areas, I would make the train ride up to take a look.

Yeah, I had already seen the G-Cans. I was actually using those just as an example of what is down there. I am actually more interested in the post-WWII tunnels that were built alongside the main subway lines and some of the other oddities Tokyo seems to have.

The downside to what I am looking for is that I know a lot of it exists but most of what I can find is in Japanese and I know enough of the language to get my interest piqued but not enough to figure out who to email or where to go.

There is one book in Japanese in particular that references the TMG (Tokyo Metropolitan Government) as saying that there is only about 200km of subway line underneath the city but then goes on to layout the possibility of there being possibly as much as ten time more than that when accounting for test tunnels, abandoned lines, etc.

BTW if you can see them, the G-Cans are something.

Try the Hibiya Common Utility Duct Project? This is cool though too:

Thanks for the tip Kuro!

If you ever head down toward Kyoto, give me a heads up and we can get a beer or coffee!
