Okay, you don't want to get gasoline in the tree and you don't want to hold the flames near any part of the tree for any length of time...I"m assuming this is a live tree...wouldn't try it with a dead tree. The webs melt and dissolve instantly when the flames hit them, or even just from the heat. The worms pretty much die instantly too, but if they don't, the web's gone and they won't last long. Keep a hose with a nozzle nearby to be safe. I've done it a bunch of times and never hurt the tree. Oh, you might not want to try this with a pine tree, since they tend to be extremely flammable even if they're alive. Even if the flames won't reach the webworms, the heat will still burn up the web and fry 'em if you can get within about 10 feet of them. That technique works on neighborhood kids climbing trees too. They don't usually die but they look pretty funny rolling around on the lawn with their eyebrows singed off. I'm a blatant waste of time and resources.
