| | | Padlocks? < on 9/17/2007 12:38 AM >
| | | Simple question: What do you guys use to get by padlocks on doors? I found this great drain and the only thing holding me back is a little padlock (didn't have any tools at the time to get in) Hacksaw the best option? I'm definitely not going to bring bolt cutters around with me, and a hacksaw in itself seems like a rather large object to be carrying around when I can bring a lense in it's place.

| | | Can you pop a manhole a bit further down?
Here's a lockpick. It might be handy if you, the master of unlocking, take it with you. |

Not exactly, I haven't looked much, but this drain comes out of a hillside. I'll take a look around next time I'm in the area.

| | | The following may contain activities that could be considered prohibited by law in your area. Please be advised this is for INFORMATIONAL PURPOSES ONLY!!!
1) Find out what kind of lock is on the entry way. 2) Purchase the same kind of lock or as close as possible 3) cut off the lock (May be prohibited by law in your area) 4) Do your UE 5) Replace the lock you cut off with the one your purchased 6) take the old lock with you and dispose of it properly. Again the above was for INFORMATION PURPOSES only!!! The theory behind is that the next time they try to get into that area they will figure they just brought the wrong key and cut it off anyway and nobody will be the wiser. - assuming this is not prohibited in your area by law. | | | I would avoid breaking it. Breaking stuff isn't cool. If there's absolutely no other way in and it's a cheap lock (say, Masterlock) you can probably pick it (or find a buddy who knows how). OTOH I've seen numerous SFIC locks on city and utility stuff - good luck picking that if you're not really good.

| | | I've found several times that dumbasses left the screws used to attach the hasp to the door/gate exposed. I used my Leatherman to unscrew and replace the hasp. Alternatively, you can often just pop many padlocks. I personally like a 14" Halligan tool, but any shortish prybar should be fine. You place the tip of your bar on the top of the lock, inside the loop of the lock, with the tip on the lock body. Then you hit the flat side of the bar with a small sledge somewhat hard. I have never had it fail on a combination padlock, and only encountered a half dozen or so keyed padlocks that would not open with this method. There isn't much you can't do with a 28" Halligan and an 8lb maul. They are the only forcible entry tools I personally own ,and they go everywhere my truck does.
Please don't be stupid. It might piss me off so much that I have a seizure or something. I hate stupid people. |

| | | Also, if it's the same drain I'm thinking of then your only options are to cut the lock or pick it.

7) Hope like hell no emergency happens where immediate access is needed to the drain and it doesn't happen because of the wrong lock being in place. Find another entry or find another location.
