I guess the Rookie board is the best one to post this in...

I went for a bike ride last night with a friend. We were trying to find a way to get to this creek that may or may not be a drain worth checking out. So we found a dirt driveway that would get as close as possible before trekking through neck high weeds.
At the top of this road is a sign

PRIVATE PROPERTY
No Alcoholic Beverages
No Glass Bottles
No Entry After 10pm

-Roch Gas & Electric

So, to us, that means: Sure, go have a good time as long as you follow these rules.
We rode our bikes down the driveway - WAY back. We had actually been down here once before, and as we rode down it this time, we joked that maybe we'd see the same guy waiting in his car for his blowjob.
Well as we get back to the end of the driveway, there is the car again, and the guy.
He honks his horn and waves to us. we keep going. we walk out bikes along a fence (containing power transformers) to the back corner (75 yards past him) and lock up.

By this point, the guy has gotten out of his car, is wearing an orange vest, and it watching us walk along the edge of the weeds, looking for a low spot.

Then he starts heading towards us....SLOWLY....
and then he starts yelling at us to leave or he'll call the cops.

We go back to our bikes and walk them back towards the exit (and him)
He is now yelling at us that it is private property and we dont need to be there.
He says to my (female) friend "if i were your dad, i would kick his (my) ass for bringing you back here.
I started laughing, and he says "Don't laugh, its not funny"
"I think it's hilarious" I say.
To that, my friend tells him that she is 30, and her dad wouldn't care. (she is 28, but close enough).
"I have a 30 year old daughter and I'd still kick his ass" says the Secuitas Guard.

We left, laughing loudly, and double-checked the sign on the way out.

I've learned the best thing you can do if you're seen by someone is just start walking toward the exit as you did. They can't really do anything to you if you're willing to leave. (As long as they're not a cop or something). I mean honestly, you start walking and just go away, what CAN they do? Especially if you're riding bikes. The bonus here is that you were able to laugh at the guy. Good stuff!

You've been warned, next time in most states he cam have you arrested for a misdemeanor trespass.
You had been better off either walking up and having a civil conversation with him, or simply leave without provoking him.
It doesn't pay to piss off cops, guards, and property owners in general. The fact that he is there should send you a message.

Judging by his unprofessional demeanor (the "would kick your ass speech" vs "sir/man you are trespassing on my clients property...") I don't think he was any big threat, legal or otherwise. Next time get a picture of him in his nice orange vest. Ask him to pose with his maglight. ;)

Well it depends what they did to him. Most cops don't even talk like you suggest.
Point is someone that could have been neutral to their presence is now hostile for no good reason, and no net gain.
By interacting on a more face to face level you also learn skills in dealing with people in positions of authority.

To turn the situation in your favor is a bigger rush for me than senselessly belittling someone for just trying to do their job.
The same cops and guards that can have you arrested can also allow you untethered entry, but provide you with information, even new sites.
I've done this with local and state police three or four times now. I have had walk-in privileges at three sites now because of treating cops as a possible asset rather than a pest.

OK Dr. Phil.

I believe in most of what you are saying, and I certainly don't think it's wise to provoke a confrontation with a cop (or even a security guard, or anyone). And I say so not just because one wants to manipulate that person for your own benefit.

BUT/BUT if a guard starts acting like a knothead - "oh I'm gonna kick your asses" - or whatever - anyone's respect level is going to slide right away. There's no point in trying to reason with a security guard who is already acting like a two bit punk. Best course of action is to walk away. And if the guard is acting so comical that one can't help laughing, so be it. If the guard had conducted himself professionally, maybe no one would have been laughing at him.

There's been times when a cop was being a totally dick, and I wasn't doing anything wrong. The worst I've done is scratch my ass as I'm walking away, although I'm not one of god's most predictable people, so the situation plays into it heavy as does my temperament at the time.
Generally I will let a cop know up front if they're out of line in a firm, but polite way. It's very rare I have a problem dealing with cops as they tend to call for backup. The sargent, lieutenant, whatever are usually unbiased as long as you didn't something stupid or grossly illegal. Even if the initial cop is having a pissy fit, the CO will usually set things straight.
Sounds strange, but staying calm and not being a prick goes a long way most times when dealing with cops.

That said too many people seemed to think that guards, even cops have "kick me" signs tattooed on their asses. They are always disrespectful. I can't tell which kind of person this thread's poster is, but the facts seem a bit strange to me with the story so I error towards the guard was just trying to do his job.
It's not unreasonable for a guard or cop to ask you why your in a location that they are in charge of.

Police do deserve respect. That I agree with. This guy was not a police officer, not did he command respect with his actions. The sign out front, while not specifically inviting us in, also didn't disagree with anything we were doing.

I'm curious to know which facts you find strange.

Sounds like it was the middle of nowhere; what was he guarding?
If it was part of the utilities infrastructure, just remember to look out for 911 hot spots and avoid them.
Since it sounds like he was legitimate, regardless of what the sign stated, and the spite his poor manners, his verbal warning carries more weight than any sign.
It sounds like they mean business, but the interest seems excessive.
Something's up.

Cops or not, guards deserve respect. They are held accountable when shit hits the fan (ie someone getting hurt etc) and have every right to ask someone to leave albeit in a more professional manner than what was mentioned here.

Too many times I've had to bite my tongue and continue being polite and respectful to people who were being abusive to me. If I end up getting rude, I can be fired and that is regardless of the provocation. As I was told during training, it's always best to keep the higher ground. Don't stoop to that person's level. Just keep it neutral and no, I don't mean bowing and scraping to that person either.

I've had people who were abusive to me come back the next day and apologize for their behaviour. Why? Because while I wanted to lay a major beating on that person during the abuse session, I've managed to keep my attitude civil and professional.

Gone for a while. Be back when I'm back.

It wasn't so much that he was being a ridiculous ass hole as it was WHAT he was saying. Namely that I would have such audacity to take a girl where we were. Whether he was suggesting we were going to get busy in the woods, or whether there actually was something else going on there, I don't know. But to accuse a 30 year old woman that she can't make her own decisions was too funny not to give him a hard time (while leaving).

Hmmm... I wonder why?

"We go back to our bikes and walk them back towards the exit (and him)
He is now yelling at us that it is private property and we dont need to be there.

We left, laughing loudly, and double-checked the sign on the way out."

You did several things wrong here --

1. You trespassed onto private property. No matter what the sign says, if you were caught and prosecuted, there would have been little to keep you from getting fined. You were trespassing onto a public utility, and that has been given extra security, especially after Sept. 11, 2001. No one kids around anymore, especially when it deals with critical infrastructure.

2. You walked towards him when you should have stood still. He can't determine if you are welding a weapon or are wanting to confront him. You should have stayed still.

3. You continued talking. Whether or not he was saying this stuff, you might have instigated something to a rookie security guard. Give the guy some respect, for giving him a load of shit will only land you in hot water. Laughing at his face, deserting the property and laughing (loudly), etc. is only asking for trouble. Be more respectful to those who weld power over you, and give respect to those whose job it is to protect and serve. Just because he may have said some negativities, doesn't mean that it is right to throw them back at him or to harass him.

4. You went at night.

At least you were let off easy. I've known photographers who have been detained, their cameras reformatted, and heavily fined just for being on public utility property. I've read about "explorers" who were "exploring" drains that have been charged with fines in lieu of $1000 and been given community service; others were charged with some terrioristic-threat law, which is even worse.

Perhaps he meant it wasn't safe, which may be will he was there.
He doesn't sound like he was the great communicator, but getting him pissed didn't help his skills none either.

It seems like it would have been worse (and more instigation) to just stand there. Although it would have caused him to get a slight amount of exercise i suppose.

4. You went at night.

the sign said 10pm. it was still light outside. we had nothing with us besides our bikes, so there was nowhere to hide anything.
