Statler gets reprieve from wrecking ball!

A California investor is negotiating to purchase downtown Dallas' derelict Grand Hotel – originally the Statler-Hilton – and restore it into a first-class property.

Last operated as the Grand Hotel, the 19-story building at 1902 Commerce St. went up in 1956. The vacant library next door was designed by legendary Dallas architect George Dahl and built in 1953.

The hotel – one of downtown's largest – is owned by a Hong Kong firm and has been closed for more than six years.

"We are working on a proposal to operate the property as a five-star historic hotel," We will most likely close the purchase in mid-August."

The investor has also contracted to buy the adjoining former Dallas Public Library building and is negotiating to purchase a nearby parking garage, she said.

"We are looking at the best way to restore the hotel, He wants to reopen it as soon as he can."

Built in 1956, the sprawling building was once considered the country's most modern luxury hotel. It was designed by noted New York architect William Tabler.

The vacant library building next door at Commerce and Harwood Street was built in 1953 and designed by legendary Dallas architect George Dahl.

The Grand Hotel faces a downtown block which is being cleared to make way for a new center city park. And just across St. Paul Street, redevelopment is under way on the historic Mercantile National Bank tower, which will become apartments and retail space.

My co-conspirator has been wanting to check that place out for over a year now, since he first saw it. Hope it doesn't get wrecked after all.

It for sure isn't getting wrecked but your hopes of getting in are gone. I think I made this a private thread, if a mod can make it public that would be cool BTW!
