Alright, so I'm a newbie, I'm sure this question or variants of it have been asked time and time again.. Please bare with me while I try and get acquainted with this stuff..

So I've gone UEing a few times this summer. At an abandoned Holiday Inn by Youngstown, Centralia (if it counts?), and exploring some stuff in a small white trash town named Stringtown, PA. But there's one thing I'm dying to enter..

There's an abandoned Highschool (abandoned for about 15 years) by my house. Woodland Hills High School (PA). I'm sure that I could peel some wood off the windows to explore inside. It's massive. But the front two doors have a small black box with a blinking red light.

How can I tell if it's a fake alarm? Can I?
What sets these kind of alarms (or any) off usually? Mission-Impossible-esque laser beams mounted between doors? I'm sure the building has bats and shit, wouldn't that trip them?

What do you guys do about alarms? Do you know how they work? What fake ones look like, or act? How can you tell?

I don't think you'd really know until you set it off.. but if something has been abandon for 15 years and they still bother to have power running to it I'd assume that any alarms are still active.. one sure fire way to find out is just go in and try to set an alarm off then leave quickly and wait around to see if anyone comes, do that a few times in a week or so and if nobody comes each time I would say it's pretty safe.. if someone comes each time to check it out then theres some kinda alarm standing in your way.. At least thats what we have done in the past.. It could be that it's just fire alarms still hooked up and not any kind of a security..

Is there any markings on the box that say what it is for?

As was said, go inside and investigate. If it is a school, it is more than likely motion detectors. They are able to be set to not pick up small objects, such as birds/bats, but can pick up big objects, such as humans.

If it's been abandoned for 15 years, I would imagine they wouldn't bother keeping the alarms in, but investigate the box a little better to see what it is, and watch in the top corners of rooms/hallways for motion detectors.

Obviously if there's power on, it's not abandoned.

Your looking at felony charges if caught.
School tend to be a drag; hardly worth that kind of trouble.
Tripping alarms puts others at risk, is disrespectful,
and it really ticks off the cops.

A smart cop, or owner,
will lie in wait for that type of con man just for spite's sake.
I like to sit in the dark,
and I imagine many others including LEOs do too.
Never underestimate small town police tactics and wherewithal.

It's probably a fire alarm; destroying any type of alarm infrastructure allows vandals, looters, and would be arsonists easy entry.
It's simply criminal behavior to satisfy your curiosity,
not good intentioned exploring.
There is a difference.

Ask permission if your hell bent on seeing the place.
Start with the police chief if it's small town.
Why lie when the truth would serve you better?

Don't listen to blackhawk; he's a sissy-boy.

I concur with trying to set the alarm off and seeing what happens. Just remember, if it starts making loud noises, WALK, don't run, away. People running from alarms look awful suspicious. ;p

I might have been wrong, it might just be a constant red light. It's just a very small box on the front of two boarded front doors of the building, in the middle of them (on the outside of the building.) It might not blink.

Anyway, blackhawk, sorry if I offended you, I don't plan on vandalizing the place in the least. Just want to get in for some nice photos. I'll take some photos of the outside of the building in the next couple of days. It's three stories tall, very large, and interesting looking. All the windows in the front (after the first level) are broken out. Same with the back of the building. There's even a fence leading to the gyms roof. I've been on the gyms roof several times, it's pretty fun, but the windows around it are boarded up.

Heres what it looks like
building from google maps

Anyway, I always thought a school would be a really cool place to explore, more cool than most places.

Tons of inactive buildings have electricity.

A school would be a cool place to explore, see what they left behind.

I apologized and explained my intentions. Try and not be so uptight, please?

And if you want to pick apart my morals and intentions, you think doing this isn't "good intentioned exploring" What kind of trespassing is, then? Awfully friendly, aren't you?

No need for you to apologize, but tampering with alarms is just bad business.

Avoid putting yourself in situations you can't get out of relatively intact.

Try talking with that cop that lives near there a he may be able to help you secure access to the building.
With permission you can take your time and not be looking over your shoulder, and post or publish the pics as well with no reprisals.

Being escorted by the police around the building seems kinda un-fun doesn't it?

I have all the best intentions. I'm just kinda taken back at how negative you were about the topic. Do you feel the same way about people who explain in extensive detail how to use bumpkeys and how to avoid infrared alarms and security cameras? The difference is very slim. You seem like a really smart person, I appreciate your advice very much. I just wish you woulda worded it better. I expected to get shit for being new at this.

I agree completely with Blackhawk. Just stay out of places that area alarmed.
And asking permission or having an owner escort you doesn't make you any less of an explorer!

They may let you have the run of the place.
Cops are just people, some are ok, all UE, and some UE freestyle too.

Bumpkeys? Your shinning me on, right?
Your getting into multiple count felonies that would buy you prison time if you got tagged.
For what?

There are abandoned sites in your area 100+ times as good, like the steel works, that would get you a trespass citation at the worst, and that would take some doing.
And your gonna pick an alarmed high school over steel mills and power plants?

You keep thinking along these lines you aren't going to be doing this long more than likely.
Many here have disappeared, some with not so much as a peep why.
Unless you can afford thousands of dollars of legal fees, and don't mind trashing your career, reputation, and future, best be more creative, and less criminally minded about exploring.

One easy to setup portable alarm and/or vid cam(s) will toast you for using this ancient, predictable, weak-ass tactic.

That happen to someone here a while back, the door was open, they tripped a portable alarm that had just been put in in response to the above tactic.

Felony B&E charges just like that.

Im with Blackhawk, Ask permission. It doesnt make you a wuss. If you cant get permission, then start looking into shady tactics if you feel you must. If you have to go to great lengths to get in there it isnt worth it. There are handfuls of other places to explore. Just my 2 cents.

Blackhawk, No I didn't even plan on using a bumpkey haha, I was asking if you felt that way in general or if you were making an exception in this case

Adopting a hobby shouldn't mean adopting a life of crime.
Even if you do trespass, that's not a felony crime.
Carrying burglary tools is just asking to be arrested.

Your in control, but only if you keep yourself in check.
Expect to be "caught"; keep it survivable with no permanent damage!
