My biggest find yet!

I'm not really sure what kind of factory this was. Found an old paycheck stub dated 1997, so it had to have been active up until that year at least. It might be a forge factory of some sort? Either way, it's one of my favorite places now. I'll be doing some more research to find out exactly what it is.

Apparently, the place was called United States Forgecraft Corporation and they made parts for parachutes and other fall protection systems. In the process of making these parts, the company used cadmium, cyanide, and hexavalent chromium.

An Arkansas Department of Pollution Control and Ecology document dated May 20, 1997 reads: “Analysis indicates a release of cadmium, hexavalent chromium, nickel, and cyanide to the environment has occurred.”

The document also noted several violations, including failure to properly store hazardous waste, failure to have a hazardous waste storage permit, and failure to operate the facility to minimize the risk of a fire, explosion, or release of hazardous waste that could threaten human health or the environment.

Forgecraft filed for bankruptcy in 2002 and sent a letter to the state saying that it no longer had assets or employees to address the emergency conditions at the facility.

At this time, the state's clean up efforts are at somewhat of a standstill. ADEQ has asked for financial assistance from the Environmental Protection Agency, and ADEQ is currently waiting for the EPA to respond to that request for help.

The state has already spent $69,000 on the clean up at the old U.S. Forgecraft building. Officials expect the removal of the hazardous wastes to cost another $200,000-$250,000.

"cadmium, cyanide, and hexavalent chromium."
are used in the chroming prosess. along with large amounts of d.c. current. did you see any "tanks" there? or "coils" the size of a small car?
i saw the "jigs" for "dipping" the small parts into the tanks (round basket looking things with hooks) in your 1st set.

Cool... I was wondering what those things were. From what I recall, I didn't see any coils like you were describing. What exactly do you mean by tanks? Large drums? I'm going back today so I'll be sure to keep an eye out for those coils and take a pic if I see some.

tanks are like waist tall above ground swimming pools but they may have already been removed as the fill up fast with contaminants. but they would be close to if not under the signs warning about the different chemicals. and the coils would be "transformers" or something with dials and gauges that read "dc volts" (low) and "dc amps" (very high!) but lots of copper is used so they have been... removed for scrap.
if you noticed any "nickle" buildup on the tray things... or a "bluish" tint to the ground or walls, that would be the area of chroming tanks.
i could go on and on as i worked next to "show and go" now "dirty joes chrome" in garland/dallas.

I'm pretty sure you're right about them removing the tanks and there's definite nickel buildup in a room on the west side of the structure.

"Dirty Joe's Chrome," wow... what a name! Sounds like they'll chrome just about anything.

Finally, a place that'll chrome plate my dog after I take him to the taxidermist.
