I'm using the highly ironic sign in the first image- and a lucky one at that, considering it's just banner-grade plastic and yet it survived the storm - to introduce a series from a region of apartment complexes just off I-10 in East New Orleans. These go on for block after block, deserted, weeds growing up between paving cracks, and unlike the neighborhoods of houses, not even the occasional brave soul with a FEMA trailer making a go of it.

In all of these buildings the first floor stands vacant and completely ruined by water. It's rare even to see much in the way of debris on the first floor. But what's really strange is that in most cases the contents of the second floors still remains, often completely undisturbed. I'm reminded of disaster novels such as The Stand in which characters visit their own former homes or those of others and find things pretty much as they've been left. New Orleans still has
military police, so I wasn't too keen to attempt going inside, but this second image captures what you can see through various holes in the walls and I think it's possibly the most poignant from the entire trip.

Wonderful shots I like the one with the missing balcony (Watch that last step) What gets me is all the money, all the people that lost everything, kinda humbles a person

May the road rise up to meet you,
May the wind be ever at your back,
May the sun shine warm upon your face, The rain fall soft upon your fields, And until we meet again, May God hold you in the hollow of his hand

nice work!
and for what its worth...
the apt i lived in (in dallas) was overrun with refugees soon after... and the crime rate (in the area) went ski hight in a few weeks. soon my complex went full sec 8 and i moved before i had a "home invasion" that whole area still sucks today. all the bussiness closed or moved away due to the constant robbery and such.

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.
