|  | | | I went down to New Orleans last week to finish a series I started in March of 2006. I wanted to compare the post-Katrina progress (or lack thereof in most cases) of the locations I had shot previously. Unfortunately, I only had one day off from work, and since NOLA is a five-hour drive for me, I didn't have much time. The lighting was horrid. We just had a blank gray sky for most of the day, though the clouds did part for a little bit during the evening. I mainly stuck around Mid-City, Gentilly, and the lakeshore. I was going to head to the Lower 9 and St. Bernard Parish, but once my mom realized we were heading the the general direction of the French Quarter, she begged me to go there instead. So we went to the Quarter and walked around Jackson Square for the 56348590564378th time while looking for somewhere to eat that wouldn't cost an arm and a leg (she was unwilling to step out of Tourist Central and go across Esplanade to the Marigny, *sigh*). I'll have to save that for another trip.
I'm not so thrilled with the photos from this trip. Not only was the light bad, but I seem to have left my creativity at home in Shreveport. Must have left it in the other camera bag...
In all seriousness, when I go down there to photograph this stuff, I end up standing in these abandoned houses, seeing the remnants of peoples' lives, and I'm thinking "Why did this happen?" more than "That would be a cool shot." I take shots anyway, because I think a lot of people really don't realize just how much destruction there still is. There has been progress, but nowhere near enough of it. But now we're getting into another topic entirely. This post is for photos.
The full series with comparisons can be seen on my Flickr. I'm just going to post my favorite shots from the two trips.
Please excuse the quality on the first set of photos. Not only does my scanner suck hardcore, but the negatives were slightly water damaged (seems appropriate, no?).
March 2006
#1 Outside my friend Alex's pre-Katrina house, Gentilly.
#2 Alex's room. Everything was still covered in a layer of gray-brown grime.

#5 New Canal Light, on the shore of Lake Pontchartrain near the Orleans Marina.

June 2007
#7 Inside Alex's house. Nothing has been touched since the last time I was there, except that his guitar (which was lying on the couch) had been moved a little.
#8 Alex's house again
#9 His roommate's closet is still full of clothes.
#10 Two doors down from Alex's house. Nothing has been touched here, either.
#11 New Canal Light, still the same.

| | | | Nice shots, you managed to get all sorts of things I missed while there but theres so much destruction still there its not surprising at all. I was however in city park while there do you happen to know what that crumbling cement hole with the zig zag bridge and the stair things on either side is? The only thing I can think of is a pool but it would be a pretty weird pool.

I've never been to Storyland, though I've heard of it, so I'm guessing I haven't seen this "pool" either. Sounds interesting! I look forward to seeing photos of it.
