| | | After exploring the Calanthean Temple, the group I was with headed down the street to the Lewis Furniture showrooms. This building's hard to miss with its gigantic LEWIS SHOWROOMS sign in blue and red on the front. I had always wanted to get in but had never managed to find a way. The doors at the back were sealed with several padlocks. Lately, one of the movie crews in town was filming on that street and decided they needed to hang some lights in the building to make it look inhabited. They broke out one of the back doors and never bothered to replace it. I really liked this building. Looking through the windows there doesn't seem to be much inside, but there were actually a lot of things left behind. There were a few odd bits of furniture, but also old sale tags, polaroid photos, signs on the walls. There were some nice architectural details, too. Many of the tin (I think?) ceiling tiles were still there (you can see them in the first and second photos). I didn't get to spend anywhere near as much time in this building as I would have liked, but I got some decent shots out of the trip. Another trip is definitely needed. #1 A look through the rooms on the first floor.
#2 All of the walls were white except this one bright blue one.
#3 Looking from an office into the store room (on the other side of the blue wall).
#4 A crappy photo of a really interesting light that was left behind. There were two or three of them hanging on a pole in the middle of a room on the second floor.
#5 Third floor
#6 And, last but not least, a fire door to the room the previous photo was taken in.
As it turns out, one of the guys I was exploring with is the one who padlocked the back doors originally. He lives in a renovated building at the end of the old shopping center this building is in and is, understandably, not too keen on the idea of kids getting into any of the buildings and setting them on fire. Apparently someone's tried before, and since all of the seven or so buildings are connected, it wouldn't take much to bring the whole thing down. It's good to know someone's trying to preserve all of it (and also good to know I'll still be able to get in once the open door has been boarded up again, haha).
