Plaquemines Parish Courthouse

These images are of the Plaquemines Parish courthouse in Pointe a la Hache, Louisiana. This is a thoroughly modern building and, despite being mere yards away from a Mississippi River levee, it appears to have weathered the storm very well. Unfortunately it was subsequently gutted by fire. The last image shows the much older jail house building behind it, also gutted by fire.

One strange detail about this place; Pointe a la Hache wasn't much to begin with, and now it's utterly deserted; there was a deadly silence here except for the buzzing of deer flies and, somewhere within the building, a broken water pipe spewing water. I have to wonder how long it's been that way, if it's been running ever since the fire.

More good stuff. Your on a role down there.

It's so sad that it managed to survive Katrina but then was destroyed by fire. I'll be in New Orleans this week, and after seeing all your shots I'm thinking I need to squeeze in a trip through Plaquemines Parish. Unfortunately I only have one day off from work, and NOLA's a five-hour drive, so I don't know if I'll even be able to do everything I need in New Orleans, much less go take photos in Plaquemines. But I sure want to try!

Thanks. On this trip I was able to cover both banks of the Mississippi, St. Bernard Parish, a bit of the western Mississippi Gulf coast, and New Orleans itself. What I didn't get to, and wish I had, was to head out west from NOLA on US 90 and then cut down south to Grand Isle. Maybe if you have time you could wander that way.

The Plaquemines Parish Courthouse burned in January of 2002. I'm surprised that it's still standing after Katrina.
