| | About that mysterious orphanage... < on 6/20/2007 5:44 AM >
| | | This is driving me crazy, no one I know can even guess at what I'm talking about. Growing up in the West Island, I vaguely remember this massive, creepy abandoned orphanage on the 40, heading in towards Montreal. It was there in the mid-to-late 80's, then demolished as some architecturally similar building was built right next to it. I can remember gluing my face to the car window every time we drove downtown, in hopes of catching a glimpse of that mysterious building. Anyone know what I'm talking about? I'd be happy to hear I didn't imagine it.

| | | You are talking about the building on Cote-de-Liesse. It wasn't demolished, but it was heavily transformed. The place is still empty today. It's actually pretty easy to enter inside, but the place is alarmed. About a year ago, We managed somewhow to enter inside. The place is totally empty and not so interesting. The alarm went on after about 1 min of walking inside. There used to be dogs inside.

| | | It was never occupied though since the conversion. If you look at the building from the back, you'll see the familiar shape of an older, religious-like building. Still for sale/lease I believe. It's been for like 15 years now. I remember coming face to face with the doggies a few years ago...

If I had to guess, I'd say that they wanted to save the old building, but it was beyond repair and renovation, so they decided to build a replica. Or maybe the old one was protected or something, and they were only allowed to replace it with a identical one.

[last edit 6/21/2007 3:32 AM by maZe - edited 1 times]

| | | This is exactly what I was talking about, thanks to all. I remember it looking decrepit, not pink-green-white a la early 90's...still curious as to why they converted it, historical reasons? What's the background on that orphelinat? Wonder what the asking price is for a beast like that. It must be reeeally haunted to sit empty for this long.

| | | I seem to recall that the other building went down around 94-95. At the time someone suggested that the buildings could be used to supply housing for homeless people. Of course that was totally laughable because everyone knew that the developers were going to turn it all into an economic boom town. Right. CD
