Newbie in Seoul
< on 6/4/2007 4:34 AM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

Hey everyone. As the subject suggests, I'm a newb to the UER currently living in Seoul, Korea.

I've searched around a bit without finding any posts about Korea, so besides introducing myself, the purpose of this post is to hopefully draw out any lurkers who may be around.

Two weeks ago I checked out Olympic Stadium, which was pretty interesting, but I'd like to hear about other good spots from anyone else who's in the neighborhood.

Probably the best thing about UEing in Seoul is that even if you get caught, most of the time security just thinks you're a lost, helpless tourist!

You should UE North Korea.

"See you guys, you never listen to me. I said there was gonna be trouble but you didn't listen to me. You guys are crazy. You know, you guys are self destructive. There's a funny farm and it has your names written all over it. But I'm gettin' out of here. I'm... I smell ice cream!"

North Korea looks like a great place for the UE (and for scuba too!)
I heard that Kijong-dong is an amazing exploration.

I want you to sneak across the DMZ and infiltrate that big motherfuckin' pyramid looking building with the crane on top.

You know the one. Now do it.

Awesome! Got any pics to share yet? And that's some good luck that guards think you're a tourist. Do you look touristy? =) I suppose the camera gear can help with the tourist image, if that's your thing...

Actually, I was planning a trip into North Korea for May, but it was foiled by my work obligations. Perhaps later this year. Unfortunately, the trip would only be to a mountainous region in the southeastern corner of the country called Keumkangsan. It'd be a bit more RE than UE, if you get my drift.

I have a couple of pictures of me on the track at Olympic Stadium that a friend took with his point & shoot, but I probably won't post them. I'm planning to buy a DSLR this week (ahh, the land of cheap electronics) so hopefully I'll be able to revisit the stadium soon.

Oh, and as for the tourist thing. . . I've been living here for about two years, so I'm not exactly "fresh off the boat" anymore. I hate to make generalizations, but Korean people often think of any non-Korean as helpless and incapable in their linguistically impossible (nudge nudge, wink wink) country. Even though I can read Korean and understand a little, playing stupid is as easy as mispronouncing an apology. ;)

Koreans are obsessed with status/social order.
It's not at all uncommon for a conversation with a stranger to begin roughly like this:
"How old are you? Who do you work for? What is your title/rank? How much money do you make?"

I don't think there is TOOO much to explore in Korea.
Remember, this is a country that was leveled by 3 years of war only 5 decades ago.
Everything is a patchwork of new on top of newer on top of just built with some being constructed rising out of the center.
I was stunned by the growth and population density.

This is in North Korea:

It was never finished and is completely abandoned.

I demand that you infiltrate North Korea and explore it!

It shouldn't be too hard. It's only like, uh, 150 miles or so inside of North Korea.

Here's a better picture of it:

Look how easy that thing would be to get into. (Assuming you could somehow magically infiltrate that far into North Korea without getting killed, which you couldn't.)

You make great points. I'm assuming you must have spent time here.

Certainly there's not a lot in the way of eighty or hundred year old abandonments (basically nothing of the sort, as you point out), but there's an obsession with newer and newest. Just within walking distance of my apartment there have been four buildings emptied and demolished within the last two weeks.

That, combined with the massive subway network (which I'm not brave enough to explore) and the opportunities in the large office buildings and department stores. . . Certainly not as interesting to me as some of the older North American abandonments and stuff, but something to keep me occupied until I get back to Canada.

Oh, and Discarsed, I'm not Korean. I'm a Canadian teaching English here. I know that's totally rare and hard to believe, but it's true. And thanks for the happy birthday!

Now you be a man, cradle your balls in both hands, and march right across the DMZ and sneak into that thing.
