| | Abandoned Road near Mt. Baldy < on 6/3/2007 4:23 PM >
| | | Long-time lurker, thought I'd throw in a contribution. This an abandoned two lane paved road leading up toward Mt. Baldy. Constructed at the bottom of a canyon, it probably didn't take long for the builders to realize what a bad idea it was, eventually rebuilding a new road higher up from the wash. As you hike up though the canyon, remnants of the original road can be found every hundred yards or so, going on for a few miles. Because it's deep in the canyon and isolated from the new main road, it's easy to let the imagination take over, and walking on it gives me a sort of post-apocalyptic feeling...

| | | Looks sweet. Once I get my camera, I want to go up there during some off time. Get together some people and film a fan-video of SG-1. Tagline-"An SG team goes through the gate and uncovers the remains of a civilization remarkable similar to present-day Earth. A little too similar notes the Colonel in charge." Just one of the many ways you could generate some ideas for a place like this.

| | | Didja ever notice , whenever there is an abandoned area for vehicles, there is usually a beetle or vw parts around. Hmmmmm fascinating! Great shots by the way. I also dig how quickly a road goes away after not being used. OK I Will stop being philosophical now.

| | | Nice Yuccas dirt. The bug in the pictures by sec1has reminds me of one in the same range on Mt Lukens.

There are definitely some decent hikes around Baldy. I've got some other pics from the top of Cucamonga Peak (adjacent to Baldy) where you can clearly see all of Catalina Island to the West. Anyone ever hiked the "Bridge to Nowhere" in the San Gabriels? The "bridge" was built back in the 30's, and crosses a huge canyon. Construction was completed but the project was abandoned after a major flood happened there. Supposedly there are no roads leading to it or away from it, and it has been compared to something you might see in a Lord of the Rings movie. I've not been there yet, but looking forward to trying it.

| | | I am planning on doing it soon. There actually is a road I hear, but it is private. I was thinking of bringing a dirt bike and getting there a little easier.
Honestly Officer I was just taking pictures |

| | | The bridge to nowhere is awesome. It's a 10 mile hike (5 in, 5 out) and the current trail is almost completely washed out so you will be walking over a lot of rocks. Also plan on getting wet, there are multiple stream crossings. I recommend climbing down and swimming underneath the bridge.

| | | It was a bridge built to accompany a route out of the LA area in the case of war. There are 2 tunnels that were going to be used, but 1 is filled in. Its been so long since ive been up there, i cant remember. I can almost picture the first tunnel.

| | | That sounds kind of trippy. Seems like everyday, I'm hearing new info regarding WW2-era projects being uncovered in these mountains. I'm crossing my fingers that maybe I'll fall into a buried traincar or something.

I've seen that bridge a few times as a "set" location for filming and always wondered what the story was with it and where it is. Now my questions have been answered. Could be a fun full moon hike and shoot.
