Etiquette Question

Not new to UE or forums, but new to contributing to this site (been a member, but haven't added anything).

I largely do my UE and photos from the outside - I have a bum leg and if I go in, I need to be sure there is stable footing. I have some stuff which I will get uploaded, but I have two other hobbies, and I don't know if they are acceptable here.

1) Malling/Dead Malling - I mall and dead mall, and have a lot of UE friends who do too. While I largely dead mall, I like to mall when there are interesting architectural features/old storefronts/old decor, etc. I have lots and lots of photos.
2) Kitsch/Roadside Oddities - I like to photograph kitschy stuff, funny signs, bad conversions (an easily identifiable building that has been converted to something else, usually with funny results). Again, I have UE friends who do this too.

Everyone seems cool, but I don't want to step on any toes.

I went back to Ohio, but my city was gone. There was no train station; there was no downtown.
South Howard had disappeared; all my favorite places. My city had been pulled down; reduced to parking spaces.

Malling and Dead Malling are visiting enclosed shopping malls. Malling is going to a mall that usually will be doing a good bit of business. I only take pictures when malling if I find a mall that has something really cool or unique (like vintage unchanged store fronts), or that has decor that is horribly dated or has never been attempted to be updated.

Dead Malling is going to a mall that is not doing much business. There are quantities of closed storefronts, mom and pop businesses operating out of former big name retail operations, often not bothering to change anything (ie: a mall about 1 hour from here has a man from India operating a small store out of an old Foot Locker - it still has it's wood front, and scoreboard hanging from the ceiling). Dead Malls are usually devoid of many shoppers, and may have entire sections closed off. Most dead malls will be dated in some manner. It's last update may have been in the late 80's or early 90's, or may have never been updated at all.

Like UE, they are interesting time capsules - they just aren't abandoned yet.

Sounds like urban exploring to me. It's not as though something has to be abandoned in order to be relevant or interesting to people here.

I'm sure you're familiar with this site: http://deadmalls.com

Yep - I have contributed to deadmalls.com.

My states in things can run to the quirky side, and it doesn't always go over well with some people, so I always like to make sure it's ok before I unleash the Kitsch. ;)

going thru the back corridors, finding the maintenance rooms and getting up on the roof of an active mall can be fun. it's amazingly easy, too. the hallways are easy, just keep yourself focused and maintain an appearance of being busy at work (as if what you're doing is your job), especially when coming up on mall maintenance crew, they can be territorial. the only tricky part is the shop area that roof access is usually located within. 90% of the time no one is in there, so timing is everything.

it's a slight rush with minimal payoff, but it feels good to get one over on the rent-a-cops. while other mallrats were getting kicked out of the food court for being retarded, me and anyone daring enough to follow, chilled on the rooftops and did some fun people-watching from skylites and entranceways.

and the best part, i never got caught...

I wish there were malls in my area, all have gotten torn down. There was a huge abandoned mall in my hometown (The St. Charles Mall in IL (listed on deadmalls)) sadly it got torn down before I got into urban exploring...

I was in a dead mall last month with a good friend of mine - one that I used to enjoy going to, but it's on it's last legs now. I really wanted to try and get in to the old movie theatre - I hear that they pretty much just walled the entrance off - but I couldn't convince anyone to try and find it with me. : (

The only experience I have had "malling" was pretty fun. It was accidental, yet still provided very amusing. A friend and I were actually trying to look for the exit in a very confusing mall and ended up buried deep in employees only territory. We both were stressed that we were lost and trapped, but also really enjoying the exploring until we got a serious tough lashing ;)

God, I fucking love places like that.

We the apocalypse comes, malls will be the first city-state communities.
