| | | Bad air/water? < on 5/22/2007 3:37 PM >
| | | I went down in a drain the other day. It seemed reasonably harmless as it was running water. However, at one point we did smell gasoline, and another part smelled like sewage. My question is this: Is there any reason to wear a respirator or mask down in a drain? Also, can anyone recommend foot wear for drains? I wore steel toed workboots the other day, and although they were not waterproof by an stretch of the imagination, i knew i wouldn't get any nails in my feet. thanks! Whittker

| | | It is not entirely uncommon to encounter all manner of odd smells in a drain--gasoline and sewage actually seem pretty typical of certain drains to me... A mask/respirator really wont help with the "bad air" issue, as all it does is filter the air, and if there is a lack of o2, it doesnt matter how much you filter the air, youre still not going to be able to breathe. As for footwear, Ive worn everything from rubber boots to waders to sandals to chuck taylors to heavier work type boots--I think it depends on what youre comfortable in, where youre going, and what you know about the area. If you havent already, read predators approach to drain exploration--links to it have been posted numerous times on this board. Hope this helps Blacklines
