First expedition - Church in St. Henri

After reading up on a bunch of places and enlisting a friend's help in tracking down possible locations, we finally settled on a good place for our first official exploration: An abandoned Roman Catholic church in St. Henri, Montréal. Apparently the place had been torched twice in the past two weeks so security was a little iffy, but we figured we'd give it a shot seeing as it was looking to be a good newbie training ground. So, armed with a digital camera (and my friend with a crowbar that I insisted she not use... thankfully she listened), we entered through a pre-manufactured hole in the boards and headed into the dim, damp world of the gutted church. We went nearly everywhere: The rectory, the second floor, the roof, the basement, the kitchen area... My camera was working overtime, though I regret not bringing a tripod seeing as a good many of the shots were slightly blurry due to slight movements. All the same, I took a few good shots and am looking forward to another go at the place; I really want to rework some of the compositions of my shots and I think if there is more time I'll be able to make them more successful.

Overall, I think this outing was worth it and I can't wait to scope out our next location!

congrats on the mission, u have to start somewhere ! my only suggestion is dont take a crowbar....instant trouble with the law
start with locations that dont need any forced entry...dont want to shortcut a hobby by ending up in jail...
good to see photos too - keep it up

Yeah, that was one thing that I had a problem with. Since there were patrols going on because of the fires the last few weeks, I wasn't all that happy when she brought the crowbar... I know the basics of exploration (don't disturb the site, for one), but like me, she's new to this. I told her what's what on the subject, so it shouldn't happen again.

We want good pictures and one can't really obtain those in a holding cell...

I agree and disagree with your statement. I agree that it's about the being there, but I disagree with your idea that one needs a picture to "back oneself up". Hogwash... All the same, getting the shots is more of an artistic venture. I'm a recent graduate from an art school and as such enjoy the creative element urban exploration brings to the table. It's also about preserving the memory of the adventure, not giving proof that you were there.

Getting caught also doesn't sit well with me and I don't view it as a real joke when you get down to it.

Oh and apology accepted

It's cool. Doesn't appear the place was altogether huge, but neat anyway. One of the first places I explored not long ago after years of not doing it was a church too.

It sounds a little risky to visit this place considering it has been set fire twice very recently - gotta be careful, if the cops get you in there they can try and pin that stuff on you! probably not, but I'm just saying... watch out.

Sounds like a good time, I enjoyed reading this entry in your journal Dragonwings. Nice pics also.

The the guys talking about photography and UE.

For me it's a mixture of both. I really like to just see what is out there in my backyard, but I love to document all the places that I've been. It also is a cool way to show friends you haven't seen in a while all the crazy stuff you've been doing, haha.

dragonwings, you might get more help if you post in the quebec forums, most of the regular posters there live in montreal. That church changed alot, when i went there first, there was still some electricity and everything was still intact!

I was more going for the i don't like the idea of proof.
I like the "sure....i was never there....." way of things.
Yay! yu accepted the apology rather then trying to eat my face!
But Srsly. I have the artistic talent of roadkill. so for me its about the adventure. this also prolly has somthing to do with the fact that my current group has no Photographer-ish person. but still.
I like that, Artistic Adventure, very....ummm....artistic??
And nothing is rly funny when yu get down to it. Its just how much of a positive vibe yu have for things.
Sorry. Again.

Oh, it's not a problem at all, I see where you were coming from now. Yes, you are correct, I do have a relatively positive outlook for this but that's because I'm a positive sort of person. I hope I didn't seem like a goofball who's just out for a thrill or simply as a fringe photographer as that wasn't my aim. I just feel there are places out there that are being overlooked and deserve to be documented. As for posting on the Quebec forums, I had no idea there were Quebec forums! I know what you may be thing, "oh, maybe you should've looked a little harder, eh, newb?" For the most part, you're right; I'm new but I was just browsing when I posted this, totally unaware of the existence of these forums. Well, the more you know, the better you can function in accordance to that knowledge. Thank you for letting me know!

On the subject of the church itself, I was back there with a friend the other week to go take some better pictures/fix the composition of older ones. The area was full of surveyors and the like but we got past them and dodged around to the back of the building. Once there, we made for the side door I had gotten in last time only to discover it was newly boarded up. We looked around and found that the place had had its corner stone removed and the spiral staircase in the back had been torn off. It was now resting on its side in the grass.

I'm going to take an educated guess and say that the place has been slated for demolition in the near future... but I'm not sure. I'll look into the matter, see what I can find out on the subject.

http://www.uer.ca/...sp?fid=1&catid=110

this is the link to the qubec regional board

also the spiral staircase in back of the church was removed a while back to prevent intrusions on the upper floors. The city or some other rich person is planning to buy the empty lot at the right (size of a baseball field) and demolish the church plus the presbitary to biuld an old folks home.

just a little bit of history; in the now flooded basement one can find the remnants of old structures of the old ste.elisabeth church that burned down ages ago, they constructed this new ugly looking building on top of the old church.

Thanks for the link and the info regarding the place. I had thought there must've been something strange when I saw the cornerstone's date and compared it the one on the statue (few decades off, hmm...)

As for the staircase, I'll have to question you on that one. When my friend and I were in the place (the first expedition), I took a photograph of the spiral staircase as it was on the second floor. From what I can remember it didn't descend to to lower story, starting at the second floor and leading up. Now when I returned the second time, the stairwell was on the ground. Unless this was removed a scant week or so between my first being there and then returning, I don't see how it could've been removed a while ago. I guess it doesn't matter in the grand scheme of things, though...

So, it's been confirmed about the demolition then. How far are they in their schedule, can you guess?

Yeah, I've got a question about that. I've seen quite a few galleries here (all of which are breathtaking! There's such a pool of talent here!) and they all are visible without the linking. They are also bigger and can be viewed as one should think works of that magnitude should be seen. Can you help explain how that's done (for future reference)?

You can upload your photos to a site like Photobucket (there are others, that's just the first I encountered and it works fine) and link them from there, or put them up on your own site. I have a website but it's for my band stuff so I do the former.
