Hiya - does anyone know of any drains that you can access via a beach? I'm thinking mainly in California, but anywhere else is fine.

Any photo's would be awesome.

I work at a restaurant down by the beach here, in Edmonds, WA. There are many drains that seem to empty down there, but I don't think any of them are open on the beach. They must pipe them underwater for a while before letting them release into the ocean (or Puget Sound, here). I've heard they do that in Lake Washington as well. However, there are many manholes for drains (and sewers- the area behind where I work is under construction, and there are 4 sewer manholes there within about 10 feet for whatever reason). There is one really interesting-looking one right on the patio at work that I want to check out, but whenever I'm down there at night I just want to go home after working. My suggestion is to look for a manhole, and research to see if you can find large ones before doing it.

Don't ask me why I'm giving suggestions, though, I've only been in one drain.

hey i don't do much draining but i do spend quite a bit of time at the ocean and have explored some shoreline caves. if you do any draining near the ocean, be sure to be extremely mindful of tides, and check the tide charts and levels way in advance. good luck!

Good advice. As for beach drains, Ive only seen a few, but they've all been gated over.

I've heard of two here in MA, haven't checked them out... the tide thing is a pain.

if you ever do find one, be careful, tides change. One minute the water could be barely reaching the entrance but by the time you are ready to leave you could be trapped.

That could be where the grease trap is emptied.

Almost, I checked it out last night, and it's just a few stepirons leading down to some really nasty looking water with lots of garbage from the restaurant in it. It is still a cool manhole cover though, I should take a picture of it.

I just want to point out a few things. Although you can find larger explorable drains near coast lines, you wont find many, and they will end up being short. Generally speaking regions like that use canals, and open drainage systems more. Especially in the south where snow run off really doesn't occur.

Many drains are also piped out to just past the extreme of the low-tide line (think eclipses and other tide-altering activities) for beach-erosion prevention.
