Active Industry, Critique wanted,

I took these photos recently as part of a work placement,

Shot on a mamiya 645 (cropped to 6x4) on fugi 160C pro colour film. The scans are not the best but I think there ok for the web.

I am interested in what people would do differently and what could be improved here. Its worth noting that these were all shot without a light meter as I didnt have one with me at the time.

I am looking for honest opinions and critique,

Thanks, RM

Are you shooting them for the company or for yourself? If they're for you, nice shots, good guesstimating with the exposures. #1 is a nice overview, but if you don't have a nice sky in your image, don't show so much of it. #s 2 and 3 could use a bit more depth of field. Actually, #2 just isn't sharp enough at all. #3 the depth of field wouldn't be as much an issue if you'd moved to the right a bit (just the camera, if there's no room for you), but as is, the sun beams are leading my eye straight into a blurry railing. Overall, it looks like you were struggling with a lens that wasn't as wide as the photos you were trying to take.

Which brings me to my next point, if these are for the company, you need a wider lens. Odds are they want the infinite depth of field, everything lit up and in focus photos, not the artsy ones. #s 6, 7 and 9 are nice. 8 would be, but it's just not wide enough. 6 is not quite there yet though, whatever looks like a pillowcase in the front right bottom corner is distracting, and the closer to the edge of the frame you push the dude, the bigger his gut's going to look. #7 is perfect, nice to see some motion. #9 is probably closer to the kind of shot I'd focus on taking without a wider lens. One last one, if #1 is for the company and not yourself, get rid of the sky and the messy dirt road in the front. Crop it into a panoramic shot just under the curb/kerb where the grass ends, it's a 6 cm wide neg, should be able to handle a decent sized print still. A touch more of the structure on the right wouldn't hurt either, but it not being there doesn't kill the image or anything.

Sorry if you didn't want such harsh critique, but there's a lot of potential here, and a few that are really good photos. Just get a wider lens. (If you can afford film, you can afford one more lens, and if you're shooting lots of this kind of scene, you don't need a 'normal' lens, just a wide and a short tele, imho of course.)

yep.

i find strength in 5 & 6.
five has an obvious subject,
six tells a little story.

the rest are very wide and show
different areas of the plant.
they're effective but don't
make much of an impact.

two is interesting.
a new take on the hallway theme.

i just think it's cool you went in
and shot around an active place like that.
i've always wanted to do that.

take advantage of such a thing, if
you can, and try to capture more of
the workers, especially without them
knowing it.

mortimer pretty much summed up my thoughts, especially about the sky. great you can walk around and take pics like that though.

I smoked Marlboro reds for 20 years, I don't need no stinkin respirator!

These are mostly for me, I was shooting on behalf of the company but I will likely supply them with copys of the the digital photos I took at the same time and not send some of the artier ones wheich are mostly for my own benefit.

I agree with a lot of the points you've made there, I would Certainly look at getting a wider lens for the mamiya as the 55mm i was using did struggle.

Thanks for the feedback, I'd sooner have comments i can use an build on than people just positng saying nice pics.

Cheers for the comments, interesting that theres a difference of opinion on photo 2. I've got many more photos of the workers (digital rather than on film) so I may post those up at some point as I dont generally do people shots and would be interested in what people made of them.

Well I didnt just walk up out of the blue, it was all pre arranged weeks in advance as I was producing photos for the company for free in order to gain experience. I was allowed a very free rein though and made sure to climb every gantry & tower (strictly in the interest of getting photos of course )

Anywmore comments?

1. I'm not so sure I like this overview-sky blown out, cropped buildings to the right. The foreground of the oval circle seems to work ok, but I think if the crop had met the top right and bottom right corners it would have been more effective if that was your goal to show the conyvers.

2. I'd kill to see it in B+W. I realize B+W is not the end all be all of photography, but I just feel certain shots could benefit from it, especially those with geometry and tonality like this one.

3. I just like this one. Not so sure about the right side, the action seems to be with the engine(motor?) and the shaft of light. Incredible exposure, esp. given you did not have a light meter.

4. I like the muted colors. I don't know what could improve this shot.

5. It feels slightly underexposed around the object to the front. It seems to work, but I'm not sure why.

6."OK" and the man makes a story here. I wish I could see another shot with those control boxes behind it. Could up the exposure a bit, but understandable given your lack of a meter.

7. I don't like this, lighting isn't as spectacular as the others and seems bland.

8. I love these shapes. The metal in the lower left hand corner and the crane seem to detract from the picture, but I love these mechanical shapes.

9. This is brutally simple, and I love it because of the subject.

I'm curious, what exactly are they making here?

I have to agree with mortimer, a lot of the shots feel too cropped as if you wanted a wider lens.

Going to expand on this a little?

I've wasted your time? I think you've wasted mine by posting pointless comments in this thread. Frankly I see no value in your words. Either explain your point or fuck off.

I think the photos are really good quality don't get my wrong but what is the point of taking pictures of a place that is still in use i think that your skills would be put to the really test if you were to post some photos for an abandoned building of some sort.

Did you even bother to read what I have written in this thread? The photos were taken with the benefit of the company in mind. to help me to develop my professional skills. I consider an active site a bigger challenge to photograph than any abandoned site.

These photos were NOT about an abandoned site. which was the point of the thread, If you want abandoned photos I suggest you look elsewhere. There are some on my website.

Anymore comments about the photos?

These active-site photos are better than a lot of the abandonment photos. Nuff said. If someone who has no familiarity with the website thinks that the pics suck, who really gives a rat's ass?

Personally it's interesting to see something active like this... it gives me a better idea of what the places I explore used to be like.

RM, sweet photos
