Fort Worth will soon say goodbye to Armour & Swift
< on 5/16/2007 10:34 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

This morning while getting ready for work, I heard a news story on NBC 5 that the city of Fort Worth will soon be demolishing the old Armour & Swift meat packing plant, along with the old power plant and any other abandoned buildings that are currently 'eye sores'.

While the place is pretty trashed out now, it is an awesome place to get your UE feet wet. It was the first place I ever explored and to be honest, I'm somewhat sad to see it go.

As for the power plant, I've never been there. Guess I better hurry up.

I tried looking up the news story on NBC's website, but couldn't find anything. I think the story will probably be repeated as time goes by.

Is the power plant the one just N of downtown, off the main st. bridge?

Yes.

I thought they were cleaning up the powerplant to put something in there. If they're gonna tear it down, they just wasted a bunch of money 'cause they've been cleaning and repairing for several months now.

Nooo! Not the power plant! If it is the plant I'm thinking of, that totally blows. I might need to make a trip soon.

All I know is on the news story I saw, they specifically named Armour and Swift and THAT power plant due for demolition.

That sucks on the power plant. I guess I'm going to have to figure out how to get down there ASAP. They could really do some great stuff with that building. I guess city planning would rather put up yet another strip-mall looking building than keep something cool - look what they did with the 7th street Monkey Wards building...it's not the perfect solution, but it's better than tearing it down.

It could be worse. It could be Dallas, where anything over 50 years old is required to be demolished by city ordinance.

Did they give any timeframe for the demolition of the Swift plant? I have been there a few times recently. I guess I need to go again soon if I'm ever going to.

Oh man I've been wanting to see both places, but I don't think I'll have a chance to get over there and check 'em out before they get demolished.

Hmm... like I said, not sure when. You know how cities are about doing things like that... they announce it to make the people happy, then take forever going through with it. Forum 303 mall is the same way. I heard 3 months ago on the news they are going to demolish it to make way for office space. It still sits there... no different than it did before.

The old power plant on the other hand has some stuff going on. We drove by there Friday and there are a lot of temp office buildings, signs stating its a construction site, its all fenced off (more so than it was before) and there is machinery and guards there. I have a picture of it, I will post it soon.

I think a lot of it has to do with who has their political panties in a wad. The city of Tyler had an old school in town left from the segregation days. It was a cool place to explore. Had been there for years, just rotting away. All of a sudden, somebody got their little political itch and the city announced they were going to tear it down, much to the disgust of the community around it. The city had been promising for years and years that they would help the residents in the area convert it to a community center.

Anyway, someone with some influence wanted it done, and by golly, within a month, it was gone. Just depends on who you know I guess. That's been over a year ago, and all the hype about what they were going to do with the land, all the stuff they were going to build, and do, and donate.... nothing. But it was important to tear it down, yeah, but after that, the promises go by the wayside.

Anyway, I'll get off my soap box now. It was just one of my favorite locations.

Yeah, I have some pics of it but I haven't posted them on here. I had them on my website, but haven't reposted them on there yet either. I took everything down and I'm completely overhauling that site. It's back up and running with a few locations, but I haven't put the school on there yet. I'll try to work on it some more in the next day or two.

Yeah, it's a cool place. I've been out there a few times, I want to go back, never did get all the way through that building in the back, behind the scale building. Have you seen any pictures from when the place was in operation? It looked massive. The few pictures that I've found are pretty old and it's hard to see exactly where the current ruins are actually in the pictures.

Yup. I went to the Fort Worth Stockyards museum and saw some pictures of the place when it was in operation. It was massive. So massive its hard to tell, but what remains of A&S are only the smallest buildings that stood back then. I also found out that Armour and Swift were the first manufacturers of canned dog food. It was called Pard or something like that.

Those have been there forever. They are starting work on the pedestrian bridge first. Dunno when they'll start the buildings though. I read they cut down on the campus to save money though (inflated labor costs. Also interesting I thought was that they said there is so much work going on around, they had a hard time even getting bids). They are delaying building 2 of the buildings, so maybe that's why.
