Impromptu exploration

Pictures from my most recent outing, last sunday, with Seraph.
Conspiratorial winds on the roof, and ninja assassin pigeons everywhere else, but overall it was a great time...and way more productive than my friday and saturday shortfalls.

Taken with a mamiya 1000mx, with fuji superia 400 (if i remember right)
All shots taken between 830pm and 12am, from the roof of, and inside of (what i'm almost positive is) the 2nd tallest building in Rockford.

(nota bene: Still just learning how to shoot film, so constructive criticism is expected, and tips are appreciated, but please...be gentle)

Leo1: You cant just wander around Gary going into old buildings! Theres plenty of crackheads that will bust you in the mouth for that camera, then run a train your ladyfriends.
Me: I like Gary, I think its nice, aside from the lack of eats on a Sunday afternoon.
Leo2: Yeah, its really nice...until we find three dead strangers in an...abandoned...thing.

Looks like a cool location. 1 and 5 are pretty good. The 3rd one would look amazing if it were in focus, but something's not right with it. 2 and 4 don't do much for me though, except I like that you showed how high up the location was.

Three is actually my favorite from the 2 rolls i shot that night. When we walked into the room it looked like the whole floor collapsed (almost shit myself, because the building is solid concrete...everywhere) but then we noticed it was just a huge puddle, with nothing in the way to break up the reflection.

I do have a few from the roof on another roll of fuji, but (aside from 45mph winds) those were easy shots. I may post some of those later, cause someone always has advice on how to improve even the simple shots.

I wanted some opinions on the interiors more, which were shot in almost pitch black, with the exception of a little light from downtown coming in the windows. I've never shot film before, so I'm trying to learn the ins and outs of manual aperture and exposure.

i do appreciate your feedback, boss.

[edit to add: I would've posted an exterior shot or two, but considering this place is one of the only accessible buildings in town, vandal free (aside from a couple small tags on the roof), and hasn't been bent over and done raw by scrappers...i'm sure my feelings of location sensitivity are understood.]

for sure man, don't give away a good spot. I agree that that shot is really good, it's just the blueish tinge at the top and bottom of the shot. I haven't done much film so I am not sure what causes that, but overall it's a sweet shot.

I noticed that blue shit too, no idea what it is either. If i stare at the print forever I can kinda see it, but it jumps out in the digital versions.

Maybe a talented film person can impart some knowledge as to what's going on with that stuff.

Nice shots, but the 3rd looks like it was taken with a cell phone camera. What happened there?

Ahhh forget what I just said you are shooting night shots with film! GREAT JOB! For just getting into it! And the mamiya 1000mx is a nice little camera for the job! Big fan of mamiya. Keep it up, you will get way better and be very impressed with the results.!

Cheers

I like 4 the best. Other seems not to be well focused and the subject isn't doing anything to me. The fourth is making me feel like I was hiding from cops or someone else. I like less 2 and 3. 2 For the subject. 3 I just don't feel it. 1 is okay but a similar shot that everyone could take. 5 I'd like to see stray line on that one, I mean, perfectly facing the window.

Number 3 looks like it's just heavily underexposed. When you get horridly thin negatives like that, the prints just look nasty and grainy. Check the negative. If it's thinner than the rest, you've found your problem.

That aside, I like the pictures. Number 3 could have been really awesome if it came out better.

Thank you controleman, I appreciate the feedback.

And trevelyan, I will try doing longer exposures and see if that helps at all. The exposure time for number three was around 15 seconds at f12, I believe. In your opinion, should I be exposing more in the 30sec-1min range? Should I open the aperture more? I've never been able to do long exposures with prior cameras, because they've all been point/shoot digitals, so this is all new ground for me.

Thanks again, everyone, for your replies.

Look up "reciprocity" on Wikipedia. That might help. Generally speaking though, when you get into low light situations (such as unlit buildings at night), you need to double your calculated exposure. To help out you can do multiple exposures. So maybe do 15 seconds, then 30 seconds, then a full minute. That way, chances are you'll get at least one good exposure. But really, one of the best ways to learn is to go out and take pictures, and post a few on here and everyone can give you some feedback. But you're looking really good so far.

I used to use the Superia 400 for longest time.
I highly recommend picking up some Superia Reala 100. Slightly expensive film(compared to the 400), but it's the real deal.
Smooth film, etc.
It usually runs about $4-$6 or so.
