MAG LED

I'm thinking about getting a new light so I can have one just for exploring and don't have to borrow one from my house. I've been using a 3D Mag, and I like it a lot, but it's getting old- doesn't focus that well, and the lens is all screwed up.

So I was looking at getting a new Mag, and they have 3D LED's on sale at the local sporting goods place... But I'm not sure I really want an LED. I like that the batteries will last a lot longer (presumably) but I don't really like the bluish tint that a lof of LEDs have.

Here's 2 I have: the tall one is ok, the Minimag w/drop-in is pretty blue.

Does the Mag LED look more like the white, brighter one or the blue one? If it was whiteish, I could live with it, although I still prefer my normal MAG. Can anyone that has one post some beam shots so I can see what it looks like? Also, how much of an increase in battery life is there? Worth paying $10 more for the LEDs over its lifetime?

Use the flashlight that you are most comfortable with. It's different in every situation. A 4D MAG is often awesome for huge old buildings with colossal rooms and high ceilings, but they're unnecessarily bulky for exploring an abandoned house. Get a big light for your longer and bigger explorations and a normal sized and intensity light for everyday stuff. That should cover you. I explore with Shai Hulud, and putting it mildly, he'll NEVER be caught unprepared for anything while exploring, but he has way too much stuff to carry in my opinion. Keep it simple and useful, and carry an extra set of batteries. LED's really don't make that much of a difference in my opinion, except that the luminosity on some of the smaller ones really sucks. Batteries aren't a big deal to me, but hey, to each his own. I just carry extras.

The light I have is a Noma Grip LED. I can get up to 50 hours of continuous run time out of it. Also, it's shock & water resistant. There are three coloured filters for it too.

Amber/Orange=blasts through fog.
Blue=anti-glare (whatever that means)
Red=great for night vision (not real night vision, just good for being in the dark and going unnoticed.

I'll try to get some pics of it.

A buddy of mine just purchased the mag LED. He's satisfied with it (not overjoyed). The color temp is not as blue as the drop-in version. We both agree that the Inova X5 is a far superior light.

I went ahead and bought one on an impulse today. The main reason I liked this one was because it has a focusable beam, unlike the LED lights that have an array like the Inova. My chance to use it today didn't work out, but after messing around with it in the back yard for a while, I am happy with it. It's definitely brighter than my old Mag, but not blindingly bright, which I don't want either. I think this will work good as a durable, trustworthy light that I can use in most situations. I am thinking about getting/making some filters for it, does anyone know where I can get some colored plastic?

I got a normal maglite and then got the LED conversion thing. Lets just say.. I prefer that over the normal bulbs regardless of how blue it seems lol

The actual mag LED seems fine to me, it's actually white... the one I got for my mini mag is ade by Nite-Ize, and it's not a very good LED or lens. So I suggest if you get one, but make sure it's Mag brand. It seems better to me.

I went out and got a MiniMag LED today (along with the LED for my 3D Mag), and to eb honest the spot colour is very close to the middle shot in the original post. Slight blue tinge to it, but I can definitely live with it. I like my original MiniMag better when on full batteries, but it quickly drops to a pale beam, which is where the LED variant wins big time.

I give the LED's credit, though... they're fucking bright as hell. I'm hoping to break them in down in some tunnels to see just how well they do (and I'll bring the original stuff along as well just in case the LED's fail in the tunnels).

Another great feature that makes it well worth the purchase is the candle mode.

I've got a 3D LED Maglight. Its beam is very impressive. It was $25 at home depot.

Personally I don't much care for the LED mags, but I wouldn't give anyone a hard time for using one....

Yami, that Inova X5 looks like a sweet light. I'm gonna have to look into one of those. I use a 4D Mag now and I agree with Majickal that it can be cumbersome at times. especially when running. it does make a nice self defense weapon though

Just a piece of advice...

If you're thinking about getting one, they don't work that well with a red filter. I bought one (the accessory pack made by Mag) and there is so little red coming from the LED that it ends up being VERY dim. I guess that might be good for avoiding being spotted, but it might be almost too dim if I hadn't been adjusted to the semi-dark for a couple hours before using it.

Meritline.com has some cheap ones. I bought a 12 led one and it is bright white, plus they were giving some free with purchase.

I have a 4D Maglite and it's awesome, I initially was bothered by the color temperature as well, but I got over that real fast - when I'm the only one in my group who can see worth a damn in some situations, I don't care if it's a tad cold... and after 5 outings, the batteries are still running strong.

And I've also found that having a metal object like a large Maglite to bang on the floor at times helps... occasionally it's the only way to tell what a floor is made out of, and furthermore whether I should walk on it.

EDIT - just in case it wasn't obvious, I'm talking about a Mad LED.

I'm not keen on the maglites. I have AA one with the nite-eyez add in, and its as bright as my 2c maglite. Granted the d mag is a bit brighter, I like blinding light and find my headlamp with the luxon bulb does it (although it only gets 4 hours on 3 AA's!

Just bought a Reactor 3 aaa led. It was about 20 bucks or so. It has no blue tinting which is great for flashlight painting in color. It can't focus though, but it's super bright, so I don't mind.

I am a theatre tech so a while ago before I got into urban exploring I picked up an upgrade kit to led for mini mag. I must say, I like the intenser light and longer battery life. I go go multiple adventures with out changing cheap batteries while most the people with my using the traditional incandescent lamp have to change batteries multiple times.
