I've heard that there is another abandoned island. For us North Americans, this one sounds good, and its close. It's just off of New York. I know nothing of it except a few buildings. Apparently, it's easier than this one in Japan, which is restricted.

There should be a "be nice to n00bz designated day on UER".

Naw, there should be a specific 'be nice to new people' forum. Oh, wait, isn't this the rookie forum? Hmm... maybe there should be the rookie forum, and then the newbrookie forum, where we can treat dumb questions as not so dumb and remember that we were new once too. And when that one gets full of jaded so-called old timers, Av can start the newbrookienewbeginner forum.

Anyways, mpark525 and anyone else interested, if by chance you haven't gone through the threads that come up when you search Gunkanjima, here's the db entry:

Your mild sarcasm makes me smile this afternoon, no easy feat after 2 hours in a dentist's chair.

Unless you're not joking, in which case yes, it's true, there is such an island. There's a documentary from the 80s where Kurt Russell escapes from there.

yep.

Fair enough, but I was being sarcastic which for some reason never carries well over here. And I find this an odd statement from you when you "called me out" as a n00b in the drainers forum a few days ago and said that /suggested my opinion was of less worth when I made some suggestions about what I wanted from a mod. Sure I'm new there, and everyone else is new at something at one point, but what gets tiring is when people don't read the FAQ's and then fail to use the search function.

Was that entirely fair?

I don't think your being entirely honest here, and your trying to me make me look like I dislike new people.

I don't, I just wish people would use the search function more often.

I have also noticed when people use the search function, people go off on them for re-hashing an old thread.

I'm not sure what I'm not being honest about, so I'll leave that alone. And I'm not trying to make you look like anything, I'm also using sarcasm, as a way to suggest that the rookie forum might not be the most ideal place to use sarcasm as a teaching method. FYI, your sarcasm usually seems to come across as a condescending elitist attitude, not as something funny.

As for 'calling you out,' that's only partially true. I suggested - with more politeness than I am using here, and not once typing a word that involved digits replacing letters - that as someone who hasn't drained and only recently joined the draining board, that perhaps your suggestions, which were some of the more vocal, were best kept to yourself. If there were to be mod nominations for uer overall, I'm sure you'd have no problem stating the same thing to someone with a 1-month star who decided that uer simply couldn't survive without their two cents, particularly if that person had not yet explored anything.

We all get sick of people not searching, but that's why the rookie forum is here - so people can learn how the site works before posting all over the rest of the forum where they're not immune to the generally abusive nature of most of the crusty longer-term members here (myself gladly included in that group). If you're so tired of people not reading the FAQ or using the search function, don't spend your time in the rookie forum. If someone fails to search in the Ontario forum or wherever else, they're fair game, have at 'em.

yep.

By the looks of the pic of the half-melted wrenches, and the position of the isle on Google Maps, it looks like the "city" was used for tested nuclear bombs in the 50's & 60's

It would appear that I was wrong about the purpose of this island.

All the information I'm about to put in this post is courteous of Wikipedia.org & Google Earth.

Hashima Island or Gunkanjima (which means Battleship Island) was populated from 1887 to 1974 as a coal mining facility. The isle is most notable for its abandoned concrete buildings and the wall surrounding it to protect it from typhoons. The isle's nickname comes from its apparent resemblance to a battleship because of its high sea-walls. It's also known as Ghost Island. Known for its coal mines, it has greatly helped during the industrialization of Japan. In 1890, Mitsubihi (the general company, not the motor company) purchased the isle to start a mining operation to retrieve coal from the bottom of the ocean. Mitsubishi built the first large concrete building in 1916 for the workers to live in, and also to to protect against typhoon damage. In 1959, the population of the isle was at 835 people per hectare (allegedly the highest population density ever recorded worldwide). In the 1960's, as petroleum replaced coal in Japan, coal mining operations were beginning to shut down all over the country. In 1974, Mitsubishi officially announced the closing of Hashima's coal mines. The isle is called Ghost Island because ever since the mine was closed, the city has been empty. Travelling to Hashima today is currently prohibited.

I hope you've all enjoyed this little history lesson.

Have faith only in those who you trust. And hold who you trust close to you for you have no idea when you will need them most.
