| | | Looks good contrast-wise, but remember that you should utilize your full tonal range. Try and get a maximum white and a maximum black in each image.

How? I really know almost nothing about B&W and it is something I'm interested in. Any advice about how to do some simple techniques would be really helpful. I just got Lightroom the other day and its the only editing software I have. It has a whole B&W editing section, but I really dont know how to use it very well.

| | | I disagree with what's being said. Even for an experienced B&W photographer, those are great prints. The tonality is a bit unconventional but that's what's so great about it. And you don't get interesting photos by following all the rules in those "how to get great B&W shots" articles in Pop Photo magazine. In your case, these photos have an old school look rich in mid-tones that I actually strive for and rarely seem to achieve in my own photos. What film did you use for this project? Or is that digital? Keep up the good work. [last edit 4/11/2007 3:54 AM by Myelin - edited 1 times]

Agreed. Without max blacks and whites, there is no main focal point. They are good photos, but a quick look says 'gray', therefore causing me to skip to the next pic instead of catching my eye.

How about these? I tried to get more contrast and hit the max whites and blacks. Keep the input coming, I think they look better this time around. 1- Redo

| | | Question for experienced photographers: if you're taking digital photos, is it okay to change to B&W in Photoshop, or should you take it on the B&W setting and if you haven't, you're out of luck, gotta go back and shoot again? Thanks, May

well DSLR users have to change it in photoshop, since there is no black & white option. ;]

Always change to B&W afterwards. Gives you much more to work with and almost always does a better job than in camera. If you need help visualizing how it will look in black and white, some cameras let you shoot in black and white in raw+jpg mode without affecting the raw file's colors.

Not true. I've had many SLRs that shot in black and white.

My DSLR has a b/w setting built in, and so far, its all I've used for b/w cause i'm too lazy to upload the photoshop software that came with the camera.
