Disappointment after Disappointment

I'm new on the site but not new to UE. I have been to only a handful of very cool places because the sites i read about or see pictures of end up being demolished. I went with my UE buddies yesterday to an old monestary we saw pictures of. We thought it was going to blow anything we'd seen before out of the water. we get there and its leveled. all that excitement for nothing. anyone know any reliable sources for locations or any advice on finding places on my own? One of the places we went we found on our own and it turned out to be one of the best! i'm getting frustrated because so many cool places are gone!

I guess i should rely more on myself than websites and photos. I'd love to access this site's locations but can't because i'm not a full member. how long before i can become one? i just want to get out there and explore!

Bet way to do it is hit the pavement or the backroads. Lot's of places out there that are still unknown to the internet crowds.

Also, use other means. For example, check out websites advertising for bids for public and private construction projects. They always list a scope and a location. Pay attention to words like demolition and abatement. In areas seeing lots of progress, building don't remain empty for long before they are either remodeled or demolished.

If you are really slick, you can do a pre-bid walkthrough pretending to be a potential contractor. No joke, this really works.

90% of the stuff i explore is not on this site anywhere.

tip 1:
get in your car, or get on your bike and ride/drive around town everywhere. you'll find something.

tip 2:
google maps and live local search is a godsend for explorers.

tip 3 (more advanced):
if you have the means, get your hands on some older (1940's-1980's) sanborn maps. usually you can find them at either your town hall or the library. they can yeild really great results in finding places.

depending on where you live, just go into town.

if its like kind of old (at least 1800's) then there is probably an old mill along a river or something

Look in places that are normally over looked such as back roads, railroad beds, those in the middle of nowhere places. Your bound to find some abandoned places in these types of locations. If not just go for a drive one day and keep a keen eye out for old decrepit looking structures.

There's an old lightbulb factory near me but the police station is in eyeshot of it so we haven't tried to get in. best access point i see is the roof because there are stairs and fire escapes. but given that its in a populated area i worry about being seen entering and getting in big trouble. any advice?

You don't become a full member just by putting in time. You must contribute in some way, there are hundreds of members attempting to reach full membership. If you prove to be trustworth (as mush as is possible over the internet anyway) then a full member will sponser / recommend you as a full member. Start exploring, maybe contact a 'full member' who lives near you and set-up a meeting. People here will believe you're truly an explorer and not just a vandal if you actually explore with someone who can verify your identity. If not possible, then explore, take photographs, share your experiences here and as you begin to develop a more personal relationship with some of us old-timers then maybe one of us will be willing to sponser you.

Good luck and welcome.

The most interesting place I've ever been in is just across the street from a police station. If it's abandoned the cops won't care as much. Also, it's much easier not to be seen if you go at night.

care to elaborate? Are you asking if the Monestary was on Staten Island? or recommending i go to staten island? i know there is probably a shit load of stuff there. I don't ever go there though so the chances of me finding a place there is slim to none. unless of course i find it on the computer.

If your intending to check out a place and you don't know if its still standing, try checking a satellite map first.

I very recently went and visited a Police HQ that was in the middle of a busy city centre with cars driving passed/stuck in traffic all the time and right next to a court house with people in and out all the time and cameras. Broad daylight, no one gave a shit or looked twice when we hopped the fence.

Similarly, I visited a brewery in Manchester (UK) which is right nextdoor to a prison and a massive Arena. Cameras, big spikey fences, cars and people walking passed all the time and a the occasional copper. Hopped a fence opposite a pub. Again, broad daylight. No one have us a second glance.

I have also been in a school, broad daylight that was within farting distance from a police station. No one came when the alarm went off.

My point? No one really gives a shit. If they see something strange, 9/10 people will usually ignore it, not wanting to cause themselves any inconvenience.

You do, however, get the occasional "curtain twitchers" and dog walkers who feel they have to report anything odd that isn't a part of thier daily lives. Dog walkers are more the enemy than security guards are.

some google earth maps are 5 or more years old. the monastery is there on the google map.

the google map of my previous home is 5 years old because our driveway was re-done in '02 and the driveway is still not done in the satelite image. so thats why you can't go by that.

I agree, my home isn't shown on the map, the lot is still 'dirt' and only the road exists as dirt. That was 3 years ago and there are houses everywhere around me now, and paved roads as well.

Google satelite isn't kept current.
