| | First building - Abandoned House < on 3/29/2007 6:56 AM >
| | | There's a house a few blocks away from me thats been abandoned for at least 8 years. It's in a quaint neighbourhood on a large lot, hidden by doctor office's and an abandoned coffee shop (also thinking of UEing). I've had my eye on it for a while and decided to go for it, however, being completely new to this, I have a few questions... -Should I check out with city archives to see if it's structurally safe? (It's small, arts and crafts style, so about 90 years old. Looks pretty run-down.) -Best entrance - cellar or back door? -What time of day? And any other advice would be awesome. Thanks!

| | | it's very unlikely that the city archives would have any info on the structural integrity of a residential home. you can just check around for the best entrance. i have strolled in the front door of some houses. time of day is up to you. if it were me i would do it during daylight.
good luck.

They won't have that information there.

If you can get in without forcing your way in, do it.

Depends on the location, if it's in a heavily trafficked location, go when the traffic isn't that heavy.

| | | when you are about to go into an old house or building, there are some things you should consider. a town probably won't have any structural records of a house, unless it flooded, there was a fire, or a homicide on the property. therefore, you need to check it out for yourself. 1. if the roof is falling apart, chances are that the floors (if they are wood) then they are probably not in great condition, and you should be careful where you step. 2. depending on how old the house is, the insulation might have asbestos, and you should probably wear a respirator (i'd wear one anyway just to be safe) 3. the neighborhood around the place can be dangerous too, neighbors might have dogs, or just be extra vigilant thanks to neighborhood watch programs, so go when most people would be at work/school, and don't go at night, if you get busted, your going to get in more trouble than normal, which leads me to the next part 4. if you do get busted, depending on what you have with you, the consequences could be bad. i rarely ever bring a crowbar unless i am DYING to get in a certain room, and if trouble comes your way, just hide it, or get away from it. -don't bring large amounts of money with you (squatters might try and rob you), and cops might be suspicious of drug deals -dont bring drugs, or alcohol, (and watch out for lighters, you could be a suspected arson) -be respectful, don't break windows, trash rooms, or make a mess in general. (especially spray paint, vandalism can be a pretty serious charge) sorry if i just rambled on and you didnt want to hear any of that shit

| | | Walk into the damn thing, and don't get hurt. Pretty much the same rule for going to work or school. If you have trouble noticing rotting floors under your feet, maybe you shouldn't be doing this.

| | | exactly, theres no set way to get into any house, you find a hole, you go in it, you make sure the floor is not sagging in where you step, and you make sure you have a bigger knife than the squatter, haha, jk
officer, I don't see the big deal... |

| | | HAHAHA Thanks guys. The ceiling looks in good condition, so I guess it should be alright. Ahh, I don't need a knife. I can take any squatter that comes my way... I'm trained in the ancient art of Hobo kung-fu.

| | | Well, I went there today and shot a roll of film of it and surrounding area. I couldn't get in it; its boarded up really tight, even windows on the second floor. The main way would be smashing the only un-boarded window surrounded by insane amounts of thorns/trying to pry it open first. Well, I could take out 15+ screws out of a board leading into the basement, or pick the two deadlocks on the front door.
*sigh* This is starting to bug me.

| | | Unscrewing the board would work if it wasnt in a noticable spot and you screwed it back up when you left. Ive done this a number of times. Normally you'll find an easier way in though if you look really hard.

Yeah, the easiest way in would probably be the kitchen window. I'm pretty sure a cracked-out hobo has taken up residence there as of two days ago. Maybe if I give him food or clean needles, he'll let me in and take pictures? =D [last edit 4/5/2007 1:04 AM by yellow_wallpaper - edited 1 times]

Haha Yeah, I was just kidding around. Oh, we have a safe injection sight here that gives out free needles so it'd be pointless anyway.

| | | There are three kinds of abandoned houses: 1. Houses bought by developers and scheduled for demolition soon. 2. Houses that are empty, but still minimumly maintained and secured by the owner or an agent. They may or may not have electricity or alarms and may or may not be boarded up, but the doors and windows are intact. There may be some deterioration inside and out, but the house could be habitable again. 3. Houses abandoned and left to rot with no concern for security or maintenance. No immediate plans for renovation or demolition. #1 is the easiest to get into. The owners don't care for them and development is usually obvious, so it doesn' t take long for them to get stripped of doors and windows. #3 is easy, but if in a farmfield, may have an owner nearby. #2 is the most difficult, since they are secured to a point where you would have to B&E. They may be alarmed.

| | | If you are going to unscrew the window boards, there is a nifty little pocket size screw gun thats out there now. But seeing that your a girl/woman, I may be a bit more concerned about who is in that building, since you think there may be someone in there. If its boarded up tight you may not have to many options of getting out of their quick if need be. Maybe you should check out other things for now; and keep an eye on that one. Someone else may create an opening in the near future.

Something to keep in mind is if the building is boarded up tight and/or locked from the outside, then chances are no one will be in it anyway. The screw gun idea is good, but be careful that it doesn' t make too much noise if you are trying to be descreet, and be sure it has enough power to undo teh screws. Also, it's just me, but I have yet to see window boards attached with screws. They are often nailed and I've seen a few that are backbolted through the opening with carrieage bolts so you can' t get them from the outside.

| | | If everything is boarded up really tight, I would really doubt that you have to worry about anyone being inside. Trying the screws is probably the best bet, and make sure to bring a flashlight (I've made the dumb mistake of spotting cool buildings during broad daylight and assuming it would be low light conditions inside, but even poorly boarded windows made interiors really dark). Also, in homage of the buddy system, you might want to also take a friend.

She did mention that someone may be inside; she needs to be cautious about this. Buddy system; without a doubt!
