Inverting is generally a bad idea and is looked down upon on this site, as well as many others. It's considered a trick people who have little experience with photoshop think is cool, and it shows lack of experience/knowledge.

just so you know.

i mean if you like it then whatever i guess, but if you take time to explore photoshop and its abilities more, youll find there are so much better things photoshop is capable of, and youll probably feel the same way about inverting.

agreed, Im a novice photoshop user. Im sure theres many other effects that could be used. I basicly did it to give an eerie look to the picture because of the history of this particular location fiction or not.

I like the composition you tried to go for and think a nicely balanced shot of the sign and radar tower in the background would work well. However, the pictures realy soft. If the sun was in your eyes, maybe try a polarizer filter or a faster shutter speed, and getting a tripod and narrowing down the shot a little more. Great potential though, keep at it and I think this could be a really nice shot.

Photoshop is a wonderful tool, but can get out of hand rather quickly. My suggestion is to NEVER use the filters, except for an occasional unsharp mask, and/or gaussian blur. A great resource is podcasts. There are a slue of decent photoshop specific podcasts, the best one being Photoshop TV. Also, the NAPP, nat'l assoc. of P-shop Pros, is also a good place to find golden nuggets of Adobe wisdom.

Too much wasted space, bad composition, overexposed...
Take six or seven shots of the subject from various vantage points and pick a best one...
Keep shooting.

Life is hard, but it's harder when you're stupid.

In fact, I tend to use invert really frequently on most of my photography. It's quite useful on photoshop. Seriously.

dont be discouraged Vic, actually I think for that shot the invert is a better photo, the color shot is just your run of the mill passing by shot, it does however for us UE folks get our curiosity up. Show the two photos to people outside of UE and they 90% i would bet pic the invert as the more interesting shot. That being said, heres a 30 second tweak of your shot, bear in mind I like I said 30 seconds, learn to use levels, dodge, burn and unsharp mask, those 4 tools will have you on your way to salvaging alot of pics that otherwise are blah...

Firstly, that photoshop job is awful - the orignal looked better. Secondly, no amount of photoshop tweaking will save bad composition!!!

I'll let you try. Copy the picture (new layer).. invert it and desature it. Mode: Overlay. Then play with Gaussian Blur. This act a bit like shadows and highlights. Reduce opacity to preference. (d'oh)
