| | | I've gone to the Rochester subways three times, and I ran into two homeless people, one of the times I went. Either give a nod and keep walking, or ignore them, or something to that effect. I also recommend carrying a large flashlight (I'm getting a 3C, but a 4D is a lot better for bludgeoning). A couple of the people I go with, always carry knives, and I always go with them, so I feel safe with them. Worst case scenario, use your body as a weapon (self-defense, etc) as the homeless aren't likely to have major weaponry, even if they're insane. I imagine that there would be little to no chance of an insane homeless person having a gun, and there's a chance that they'd have a knife, but that's the reason for you to carry a knife as well. (B&E/Burglary laws aside... always assess that situation when you're carrying a weapon)

| | | you definitely should, but the homeless are often armed, and while often mentally ill aren't USUALLY aggressive. normal people are normally not homicidal, but it does happen and it's better to plan to defend yourself and never need it than the alternative. be careful about the maglite's, if you use it against someone it can be considered as lethal force just like any other weapon. eoghan

| | | hey,im 16,so im in the same boat as you sort of.
First a little story. first time i ever explored anything was at a local psych center.I was exploring with some friends from school, and none of us had ever explored before. the building i did,was a hotspot for scrappers, and like you,im more terrified of running into someone, than anything else,as any of my little crew will tell you. we got up on the roof, and i heard what sounded like a generator, and we booked it out of there so fast. it turned out to be a model airplane. As soon as i started exploring with my current crew(Actofdepresssion and aerofennec)i am no longer afraid of running into people. i sitll get spooked easy, like when AOD walked through the elevator hall, instead of the kitchen in a building the other night, and scared the crap out of me,but im no longer afraid of being attacked. keep in mind, most people are as scared of you,as you are of them. I keep meaning to pick up a pack of cigarettes though,to throw in my UE bag,as ive heard from a lot of people that they are a good way to make a new friend. when i first started exploring,i would walk really slow, creep around corners etc... but now, like most other people,i walk normal pace, keep level headed, and dont let my nervousness stop me. then again,it helps to have erics tripod around(the things like a baseball bat on steroids). Find some friends that UE,that you trust. i dont mean school friends or whatever. i mean people that you will follow unconditionally in almost any situation. having faith in yourself is one thing, having faith is others is whats more important in the ue world, you have to know that someone has got your back.I did a building a week or so ago that i was petrified of,because of all the scrappers that had hit it(my one fear is getting my face bashed in by a scrapper). I was almost shaking, but i followed my buddy because i trusted him. it helps a lot to trust your group. I suggest you pick up a 3 dcell maglite,it really is a confidence booster,or better yet,if they are legal in your state(i dont think they are everywhere) pick up a 6 cell, cause its like a bat. once you realize there arent people in the majority of these buildings, and if there are, they are probably used to seeing people around, you will be fine. i still feel though, that if your going somewhere where there are druggies/tweakers,its not worth the risk. Lastly, being scared in a building is dangerous. you can panic and make poor judgement,so if your overly scared inside, get out, because you could be putting yourself at added risk. | | | most homeless people are chill. all you have to do is be nice. vandals can be nice too. I've had some stop in their fleeing to warn me that workers were on the way. kindness often can avoid most situations where weapons would be needed.

| | | Even if people will not admit it, but we all have one fear back in there mind. For instance, some people fear falling through the floor. They won't let that get in there way. My biggest fear is getting arrested. I feel that where ever I go I could be caught. Sure, I can work around that, but I will always have that in the back of mind.\

| | | violence should always be your last resort. no matter who you are, violence, even in a fully justified self defense situation, has serious consequences. you should research your local and state/province laws and know what the score is before it becomes an issue for you. alot of people talk about their bigmaglite's, i have seen police officers charged with manslaughter, negligent homicide and even 2nd degree murder after using mag lite's in a self defense situation. eoghan [last edit 3/20/2007 9:10 PM by eoghan - edited 1 times]

And what are the chances of you getting arrested at an abandoned place for knocking some attacker unconscious? Who is going to call the cops? You? The guy passed out on the ground? I think not.

| | | I have heard more experiences with personal injuries than any encounters with the homeless. It is always best to have someone with you in the event of an accident. And actually, sometimes the homeless have good advice on dangerous spots in buildings.

| | | Honestly, I'd be more worried about falling through a sketchy floor or getting arrested than I would be of the homeless. Usually they just want a place to sleep or call home, and as long as you aren't causing any trouble or threatening them they should have no reason to turn violent. Just treat them with respect and be on your merry way.
Or... just avoid any place that the homeless/tweakers/etc could linger, which basically means give up UE almost entirely. xD

| | | I have found the same issues when running into people as mentioned on this thread; they want your cigarettes and they want to talk your ear off. If you can get them on the topic of why YOUR there, they can even tell you some other places to explore! I myself am more afraid of falling through a floor, stairs, etc. Having a good exploring partner can help you with a lot of your anxiety.

| | | I'm kinda new to exploring too; but i either go with a group, or i carry some sort of protection in the form of a knife or heavy Maglite. I have run into Hobo's before and most have been pretty nice. The only issue i have have had is with kids doing drugs or something in a location and getting pissed. After you go to a few places, the fear will go away, but the thrill will still be their to drive you. The real fear is getting hurt, falling threw a floor or worrying about nails or broken glass cutting you up. No matter who i run into thought, I'm always nice because that seems to work allot better then being upset that they are their as well. DarkSeaker
