san diego, ca water towers - where are they???
< on 3/15/2007 8:28 PM >
Posted on Forum: Infiltration Forums

ok, I got SOME info from the water agency in san diego, but only enough to be frustrating.

What I know: there are unused water towers in San Diego.
What I don't know: where they are. ("Oh, we can't tell you, that's helping the terrorists")

Is this old news to anyone? I figure there's a list somewhere of all the towers in SD, new or old.

If you know anything/have q's, you may want to email me too. I come here maybe once a week.

This will be fun.

In the interest of this not becoming a big dog pile (as whitecollarboy is ready for it seems) I'll make a few points.

Active water infrastructure really is something that you don't want to mess with too much, the reasons it's being "guarded" are valid. That being said i can't say i'm too supprised that the worker you talked to didn't give you any information. I'm not sure any company would just give out info to people that asked "hey, what unused buildings do you have around that i can poke around in?".

Sharing information is good, asking for information can be good too. Chances are though if you actually want people to give you anything you're going t have to give them something, even if that something is a bit of trust. You've been here about a month, and this is your first post; not exactly confidence inspiring to your fellow explorers.

There were other points i was going to make here, but i need to finish a paper. You might try your local library, or your cities webpages/ engineering dept for maps that might have what you're looking for.

I really don't mean to come down on you for such a little thing, but this is a little far out there.

Hobo: Its considered bad form to ask for locations, especially on your first post in the forums. We don't know who you are and what kind of explorer you are.
- Are you out to tag one our favorite site?
- Do you want to take objects or vandalize it while you're there?
- Will you be so careless as to attract attention to the site and get it 100% locked down?
The only way for us to know the answer it to spend time in the forums and maybe meet up with some other explorers.

Have you found anything on your own? Let us know and show us some pictures! Discovering locations is half the fun.

Ah, rules. There's always rules.
"a little far out there."
If this kind of this is the hallmark of (a) vandals (b) noobs and (c) taggers, its commonplace, no?

1. Tagging can be artistic, but i don't.
2. take stuff? vandalize? Why would I have to 'look' for a place to do that ?
3. careless? I'm super suspicious, and i haven't been caught yet.

I could tell you everything I know about these towers I'm looking for, but it wouldn't matter, b/c I can't ask for anything in return. yet. [sigh] So, how often have those things happened to your favorite haunts?
Have I found anything on my own? Only a few. A couple places in downtown san diego, a few in the east county, but there's not much out there.

I know people usually want something, but i don't know what they want yet, and if you don't ask, you don't get. so i asked.
Until I've earned something, if there's even any info to be shared, I'll followup with professional acquaintances in the san diego waterworks, go thru the library again...
In the meantime, i suppose I'll post stories about my adventures in the 100yearold bldgs downtown and the commercial outlying areas.

For those of you waiting for me to 'prove myself', this is what i'll be asking you about. eventually.
1. water towers in san diego - the abandoned ones
2. abandoned buildings in san diego
3. but most of all, unused missile silos in colorado or wyoming!!

You'd be surprised what you come up with just by asking

Also, I work in sales, so this doesn't even come close to "coming down hard"!!! No worries. The only thing that bugs me is the thought of having to wait months and/or post regularly on these forums just so I can try get a membership....and possibly not even get it, making it all a waste of time...

I'm gonna give this guy a chance. But as it goes, if it's all talk and no show, then no chance of sharing in return.

In order to trust someone (and how you rant on like this, it's not showing us), meeting the person would be good, exploring simple things with him would be another. Just talking and having a cup of joe with him on a good night and share pics and info at Starbucks would be one as well.

It's not that we don't want to not invite you to participate in the events and explorations with us, but in order to get to that point, we need to find a way to trust you and your words in some way or form.

And yes, everyone here had to do this one way or another when they joined. So we're not picking on you. We're actually trying to help.

As Dan-oh and seany said (I agree) we all contribute with pictures and information. It's never a "me" situation when it comes to UE.

My two cents.

That's what the responses showed me, that there's a history here of people doing that.

I wasn't ranting, but i did try to be transparent. That's what I dislike about computers; its so hard to convey intention or emotion.
Anyway, that's why I'm looking for chaps in the area to UE/spelunk with. Face-to-face is way better for building trust or connecting.

As I have time, I'll post stuff.

Hope not. I own three businesses, and spend the rest of the day UE'ing. Not much of a hobo there...

I have an expanded knowledge of the entire SF bay area for the Southern Pacific Railroad. I can tell you the timetables of the freight and passenger trains, what track they'll arrive on and where they're going... when looking at the load, I can tell you where they came from or what it's purpose is. From a distance without seeing the engine, I can give you exact details of the engine by listening to the sound of the horn. And I know the layout of every freight yard and rail line in the San Jose area.

I am RailGuy88!

hobo = someone who rides the rails. If you know so much, you'd be a valuable guy to meet (if that were possible) next time I ride through.

Well, I'd think twice before catching a train with UP on the west coast. They are very strict with the such riding for free. It's not the same as the east coast or in Canada where you can just run and hop onto a moving train and hope for the best. ... The best you'll be hoping for is a warning, or else they will arrest you for tresspassing and also fine you $1000.

Friendly advice.

you can always skitch on the back of the train with a mountain bike =P. technically you arent riding it, just taking advantage of all their horsepower.

Yeah, something like that... Or turn your skateboard into a rail-riding car. Although I'm sure you'd get weird looks from people when crossing the roads.

BTW, what does this have to do with the water towers?

I rode the Santa Cruz line from Watsonville to Davenport and back last summer without any trouble. This was my first ride since 9/11, its much harder now.

Abandoned water towers you say??

Define abandoned?

Theres a large one in my area, but its got high concrete walls around it and tennis courts on top of that.

It is semi-guarded.

Not sure why you think you'll find a completely abandoned water structure within city limits....

I'm in land SD covering everywhere from seaport village to as far back as spring valley and El Cajon, in my UE knowledge.

I'm not going to help in blowing up spots thats not my style, but if your curious and you just want to look for right now, then i see nothing wrong with that.

Hell the people that guard the tower I'm thinking of might actually show you around if you approach them right.

They regularly have large soccer and tennis gatherings there, so im sure they get enough questions that they would be able to give you SOMETHING.

Actually, I heard back from my contact, and I now have one location. yay!

what's abandoned? unused, empty.
why do I think I'll find one? see post numero uno.
blowing up spots? is that slang for vandalizm, or a jab at my comment about "terrorists?"

Not sure why you interpreted what i said as rude, but thats not it.

And no by blowing up i meant just bringing a lot of people with or spreading the word around that theres a partially abandon water tower over here.

Wasnt trying to give you a hard there.
