| | | | Saturday wanderings: B&W edition < on 3/11/2007 1:21 AM >
| | | Was out shooting some stuff for work today, so nothing terribly exciting - was in a black and white mood. First three shots are the first time out with a new lens - the Nikon 70-300mm f/4.5-5.6G ED-IF AF-S VR (how's that for a mouthful). The last two are my first attempt at passable IR shots... Hoya R72 used on Nikon 35mm f/2. 1.

| | | Nice pictures. I am not normally such a big fan of graveyard pictures, but the contrast between the sky and everything else looks really cool. Looks like a pretty good lens for such a wide zoom range.

| | | You should have gotten a picture of the nearby signs warning "don't eat the fish!"

...the wings on my shoes shrank now the moths won't eat my kidneys, when i shake my state capital it only yields 3 fairy napkins, but how do i know my banana slippers are like water boats because when the moon winks it burns my hamster punches, and that's how you get to llama school rowing your canoe backwards up main street when the front bumper falls off, do mermaids get to drink orange juice? |

| | | Those are nice... I wonder why my Nikon won't do that. Haha...
Did you do any photoshopping to those pics other than the black and white? Just curious.

| | | Heya, Wow, wasn't really expecting any responses on this post - cool! melon_collie - it's turning out to be a great lens... tad bit soft at the long end, but that's normal. RobertB - I think I missed that sign somewhere - however there were people fishing all over the place near here. I guess the turbulence draws the fish or something. Happiedaze - yours will too, all you need is an IR filter. I use the Hoya R-72, which depending on filter size you can pick up pretty cheap. 95% of the time the only post-processing I do aside from HDR is black and white conversion and always some unsharp mask.

| | | Great pictures man. I'm in Arkansas this week, headed to Pine Bluff today. Found a nice old closed hotel yesterday, but due to a friggin flat tire, I ran out of time to look at it. Hopefully I find some places to hit today.

| | | Kinky like a walrus in a tutu. Anyways, HDR: http://en.wikipedi...amic_range_imaging HDR is something I use a lot, but at the same time try not to leave any trace that I did. :p I find it especially helpful given the bright Texas sun and it's tendency to cause horrible blown highlights. Unsharp Mask: http://en.wikipedi...ki/Unsharp_masking I use the Lightness channel method... as my very last step, before applying the border, I switch to Lab color mode, choose the Lightness channel and apply Unsharp Mask. This eliminates color halos due to sharpening. Zoom lenses typically lose sharpness at the long end of their zoom range. For example the 70-300mm that I was using is essentially a 105mm-450mm on the D50 body I was using. For the 2nd and 3rd shots here, I was zoomed all the way out, to 450mm. I was just commenting that the lens did soften a little, but nowhere near as bad as I've seen on a lot of long zoom lenses.

I think it has to do with the water temperature. The plant draws in water for cooling and discharges it down that side canal. The temperature gradient helps make sure there's always a happy spot for Mr. Fish, I think. Unfortunately, a certain branch of the military had a base nearby, dating back to the days when mercury was that cool stuff you poked with your finger on the chemistry lab table. ooooooops. In theory, though, the fish from the canal should be clean...er. In theory, of course, a pig with sufficient velocity can remain airborne indefinitely. I just know I'd have to be pretty desperate to eat those fish.

| | | Nice job. I just bought a Canon Digital Rebel XTi, and can't wait to play with it. I'm waiting for my CPL filter to arrive before I shoot too much outside. Great pics and thanks for sharing.
