Hi im new here and been on a few trips, but those were with buddies that did this all the time. I wanna start going again with other people and just want to know if there is a way to tell if there are any hazards such as asbestos that require a respirator.

Some abandoned buildings that have been inspected will have signs on all the doors with asbestos notices (in the form of a large "(A)" or "(a)"). A P100 rated filter will prevent the fibers from entering your system. I recommend the AOS Safety brand canister filter half-mask, and the 3M secondly.

MSA masks are also good its what I use, and I believe there is a topic somewhere about masks and asbestos already.

Come on, 3M after AOS? Obviously youve never used a 3M Cool Flow mask.

You can't deny the coolness of an AOS can filter!

If the place is that bad should you even be their?
All that asbestos is gonna be inside your clothes and on your skin and hair when you leave anyway.

Although respirators have that cool factor.

Trying to win hearts and minds, but willing to splatter them if neccesary.

No doubt, Glassius. I love mine. Funny thing about it though, my father-n-law used it once when he was helping with our front porch painting, anyway, he is super nice, but not the sharpest tool in the shed, and he couldn't figure out how to pull the thing down that tightens the whole thing to your face, he said, "I can't see what I'm doing with this thing ..."

As a licensed inspector/project manager in Nebraska and Iowa I can lend some advice on this.

As the gentleman earlier stated a half mask with p100 (Magenta colored, aka purple) filters will work just fine. The majority of asbestos removal is done with these types of masks.

For the most part you should have no worries with any asbestos unless you're directly messing with it. The nasty things that pose the most danger are TSI (Thermal System Insulation), sprayed on fire proofing, and trawled on ceiling materials. You wil most likely run into the TSI type most of the time. TSI can be indentified with the eye pretty easily, and even more so with the hands. If it doesn't look like fiberglass, it's probably asbestos containing. If it's hard, it's a yes. However there is a type called "Aircell" that looks like corrugated cardboard and tends to be pretty nasty stuff.

As another gentlemen stated, if you walk into a contaminated area you pose the risk of contaminating your clothing and skin also. You won't be able to visually identify the harmful fibers that are the worry. A "decent" fix for this would be to buy some "Tyvek" type suits (in bulk you can nab them around .20 -.50 cents a piece). They are disposable and not to re-wear. Double suit going into an area, take one off on the way out, then the other when you are out of the area. Duct tape your filters or remove them and trash them right away. Wet wip your face and you should be good to go.

Contrary to what another gentlemen stated, not all buildings have notices of asbestos. Schools have to ( K-12 only ). Hospitals usually do in their mechanical rooms. Other places are hit and miss and usually don't advertise the fact to the public to save themelves from lawsuits. The train of thought is most people freak out and have no idea why they are or what the reality of the risks are. much like exposure to radiation ;)

Thats a pretty long post for a first post, but I figured I would throw some infor into the mix.

If anyone reads this and has any questions about asbestos, or any other hazardous materials, feel free to send me a PM and I will send you an answer as soon as posible.

Thanks!

Oh, we have a lot of asbestos experts on our boards. You are in good company.

It freaks a lot of people out. There are many regions who won't explore a drain without a can filter because of worries that the cement piping has asbestos fibers (as many do).

Funny, huh?
