Updated post with my night photography
< on 2/21/2007 2:04 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER Forum

I recently came in contact with one of my old college professors and he asked me if I would be interested in submitting some of my work to the school for an art show. I narrowed it down to the following thumbnails below. I figured I'd share them on here with you because finally took the time to link up thumbnails for viewing on a another forum. I have hundreds more on my site, some of other abandoned buildings that are interesting but not stuff I want to show in the art gallery. Anyways, I living outside Philly (Main Line, rt 30 near KOP) so if anyone wants to GTG and shoot night photography sometime, let me know. My contact information is on www.arinahnell.com:

*NOTE* these are not computer manipulations... the white border images are all shot on various slide films (expired, color shifted, new, tungsten, daylight balanced, etc) from my old shit ass 1980's nikon full manual. The gray border images were shot on a new canon 20D in raw with only raw format white balance adjustments and such. The only exception is the image of the people near the bottom. I shot images for a band and touched up their photos a bit.

FIXED THE LINKS!

Sorry, no thumbs for these. They are not even listed on my site:

If I'm not too far out of line here, might I suggest reading the "Photo Critique Guidelines" sticky post at the top of the page? While they are suggestions only, they are based on reasonable logic.

If you want to post 4,586,274 pictures, you might want to use the UE Photography forum, not UE Photo Critiques. And if you're posting them in the hopes of drawing attention and/or traffic to your website, you might consider instead posting in the UE Website Updates forum. Just some thoughts. Take them how you will.

yep.

how did you take the picture of the car where your crisp and there is light trails outside?

Was it a flash, then long exp, or simply a very steadily held long exp?

turk ;)

If its do'able, do it!

I like the perspective you choose to see the city from. Too many photographers here focus too much on cliche aspects of urban decay (that's only part of a city's landscape) You definitely seem to concentrate on a broader range of the features of an urban environment. Cheers to that.

It seemed like a good idea at the time...

Forgot to mention, your stuff's pretty good. Fan of Troy Paiva?

I think you need to work on editing skills - some of these are really good, but some of them are crap. The crap makes the good stuff look not so good. Editing this down to 10 or even 20 really strong images would do wonders for the good ones, give them a lot more impact.

The underside of the bridge was pretty dark requiring about a 5 minute exposures to get enough light to work with. I had him park the car with the lights off for about five minutes. I blasted the exterior a few times with a red flash to add a bit of glow on the car and to fill in some of the darker areas. I also handed him the flash with a blue gel over it to blast on his face while sitting in the car. Then after about five minutes I had him flick on the parking lights as he backed up and moved down the tunnel.

Yes. Around the time I began experimenting with non colored flashes and flash lights at night a friend pointed me to his work. I was blown away! Bought his book as soon as it came out and chatted with him a few times on film selections and his jump to digital. I really wish I could shoot out west with his crew. They have an an endless wealth of knowledge and locations.

Quite a bit of nice work!! Looks like you have some pretty sick locations yourself.

Troy doesn't really have a crew. I've turned him on to a few places, and shot with him a couple of times, but hes kind of a solo dude mostly. We do both belong to bay area night photographers, a kind of loose informal club. He also gives lectures and shoots with The Nocturnes (look them up for a wealth of night photography information), but mostly he shoots alone. I too was blown away by his work.

on flickr check out troy at lost america. Some of the Bay Area night photo crew are: Joe Reifer, Andy Frazer, Broken Obelisk (me), Lens Flare (darkstuff on here), and tons of others i'm sure.

Like your work. Keep it up!

Yeah I know he's mainly a solo guy but I know he's shot with The Nocturnes and a few others. One guy I talked to on VWVortex said he shot with Troy and a few others.

I checked out his flicker site a while back and my brain melted. There was way to many photos! I couldn't look at all of them in one sitting so I blew up. I wanted to start up my own but it's gunna be a lot of uploading work!

not sure why this is allegedly the wrong location??? its the critique forum and it is for art photos

lots of people post non ue stuff here somebody always has to find some little thing to reaffirm their superiority

but theres a bunch of critiquing and non-ue stuff the the photo forum too

2X says good art

please continue to share

It's the wrong forum because there's 27 billion photos +1, and you can't seriously expect anyone to critique all of these. It should be in the normal photo forum, that's all, no superiority involved.

Also, there's lots of ue stuff here, I'm not sure who mentioned that as a reason for moving this, wasn't me. Although I really don't like non-ue photos on the uer website, but I seem to be a minority these days. So be it.

Anyways, I agree, they are good photos. I'd like to see more as well. Just not this many at once in one post.

yep.
