Myself and a few others got severe chemical burns from rusting drums at an old millitary base. Put me out of work for a week, mainly because I looked too gross to help customers. Lots of itching.

Were you guys around the chemicals or did they touch u/get on clothes..? That burn looked terribly painful.

Well the doctors claim that I will always have 'bells palsy' but the symptons have gone away. The left side of my face didn't work for about 6 weeks. I may have episodes of that condition several times during my life.

It was funny, I couldn't blink my left eye, so whenever I was talking to someone, my right eye still blinked... people always thought I was *winking* at them, made some guys uncomfortable.

You got a disease from being in there for less than a day? I'm gonna stay away from coal plants.

that sounds like blister agent. ooowwwwww

i had part of a building collapse on me in the old aliquippa terrace projects when they were being demo'd. concussion, wrenched and sprained ankles and knees, cuts and abrasions and last but not least pretty sever back injury [lower]. that really sucked. i didn't see, but i think it was triggered by a couple copper thieves. a friend saw the guys running away just after the collapse and they were COVERED with masonry dust so they had to be right in there. i was on the second floor in a back unit and the building fell from the first floor front.

1) Pinched arm in doors and got stuck... double doors came together after a friend pushed on them and they pinched some skin on my arm. Had to have my friend help pull the doors open again. Arm was bleeding and swollen, I used the bladder from my hydration system to wrap my arm and reduce the swelling

2) Developed 'Bells Palsy' after exploring the R.L. Hearn coal fired generating station in Toronto. My wife's mask broke, so I gave her mine. I spent hours inside the plant, and I even climbed the stack without my mask. A few days later half my face stopped working, doctors said 'Bells Palsy' Funny thing was, they said they believed it could be caused by exposure to coal dust, had I been exposed to high levels of coal dust? I believe their theory is correct!!!

Very unlikely UE caused the Bell's palsy.http://www.bellspalsy.ws/cause.htm
It's almost always caused by neck trauma but more commonly by infections, most times by the nasty viruses in the Herpes family. You make have contracted your neck/trap muscles violently enough when your arm was pinched to do it though. Very unlikely any toxins at that site play a role(which is good news).

Those were two different trips... As for the broken leg no I jumped and landed very badly. The split head, I was in a dark area and was to busy talking to someone and wasn't watching.

The leg break sucks big time!

If you wear a hat it's too easy to really nail yourself. I did once climbing a ladder; who would put a 2' piece of quarter inch angle iron at the top of a permanent ladder? That hurt, but luckily I was climbing slow due to dust.

We probably got the burns from some drums of chemicals that rubbed off onto our clothing. Not really painful, just very itchy.

ankle and knee injuries are forever. my first ankle and knee injuries were in the army in the 80's. that's why i have easily injured mine several times. i've had numerous serious sprains and breaks, so i'm a little chickenshit about where i walk and what i will wear or do on a ue. i'd rather be a little cowardly than try to ue in a wheelchair.

winter and damp mornings are unpleasant to say the least, and it's had a definite impact on my camping and other activities. i've even sprained my ankle standing still. i'm not looking forward to my 50's and 60's. get the best gear you can afford and be conservative about your risks.

I know that it can be caused by neck trauma, but the injury to my arm was a year earlier, so that isn't the cause. Severe neck trama can cause the same symptons as bell's palsy, but with a known cause and therefore not actually bell's palsy but just a bundle of pinched nerves due to flesh that is swollen in response to an injury.

The belief is that bell's palsy is viral, but there is a suspision that coal dust causes the inflamation around the entrance to the skull of the nerves involved. There are so many possible triggers to bring on an episode of bell's palsy that it is very likely that I will have it again. In truth, they aren't sure what actually causes bell's palsy, only that the nerves are pinched, but the cause of the inflamation is only still a theory. There is apparantly, according to the doctor, case history of coal dust exposure triggering bell's palsy, and I had a large exposure to coal dust just prior to the condition.

The 'ring' of flesh around my nerves at the entrance to my skull was swollen. That caused some pinched nerves, and then part of my face stopped working. The reason for the swollen flesh is unknown, that is the condition of "Bell's Palsy" an unknown inflamation of that flesh. Sometimes the inflammation never goes away, and a person loses control of their muscles permanently. Herpes is considered to be the likely cause, but I don't have herpes, so they looked at other possible causes.... such as coal dust.

You do have Herpes if you had Chicken Pox. Herpes Zoster is one of the nastiest in that virus family. This is some of the stuff it's notorious for. Stress can trigger it, but fortunately it's self limiting although it can drag out for months and be extremely painful. Try sublingal(slowly dissolve under tongue) vitamin B-12, Twinlab makes microdots of it, good stuff, and always use a B vitamin multiple when using B-12. This will help.

Never had chicken pox, but the Bell's Palsy went away after about 6 weeks. It was more then 3 years ago.

Funny thing, I've been searching the net for Bell's Palsy information since this thread started, it seems that there is no longer any discussion of coal exposure, maybe it has been disproven as a possible cause sometime in the past 3 years. During my bell's palsy time, I reasearched everything that I could find about the disorder, many experts at the time agreed with my doctor citing coal exposure as a possible cause... big conincidence I guess! So I am officially removing Bell's Palsy from the thread as a UE related injury or sickness... unless someone can find a link between coal dust and Bell's Palsy.
