Or I could just go there, take a 2-coiler on the reception desk, and leave.

"Can I help you?"

"Sure. Since your server decided to take a dump on us, I thought I'd return the favor!"

Try to get a big rebate from the company, and raise money for our own server. 1k isn't really that steep, stuff is expensive, my laptop was 2.4k...We could raise money to build our own server. No one is saying that we need to raise the 1k instantly. We could stay with the current hosting until the money is raised. I would contribute. Not a lot all at one time, but I could probably donate a bit each paycheck.

Virtual machines take up a lot of resources. Plus, the resources that this site take up are way to great to even think about shared hosting.

They do take up some resources, but i think you should look into them again if you instantly write them off.

I say this after i just migrated a 4 server active directory installation to a few virtual servers.

Let me know when you want to buy the server. I'll put in my share. Aim high. Don't accept parts donations. Buy new, and buy quality. Seriously, I'd pay a monthly access fee to be here if I had to. Not a lot though

UER uses about 300-500 gb a month.

Erm, no. This isn't a publically traded company; you aren't buying stocks. You would be making a donation to the cause. Obviously, I will hold the requests of donors in high regard and will try to help them out more in return for their generosity, but I'm not selling off UER piece by piece.

Well, that's the main reason why I no longer donate to UER, and have not for years. That and the rather exorbitant costs of running my own site, which I don't ask for donations to. While I respect that AV wants control of his site, I personally disagree that soliciting donations should not mean more community ownership. That is why I don't ask for donations on my site. I feel that I would be morraly obligated to those that donated.

UER uses about 300-500 gb a month.

You should only be paying $19.99 a month then unless there's more than 300GB of data on UER.ca:

Well, 1&1 needs a serious lesson in customer service, there's no doubt about that. Did the outage affect only your server, or were there many customers complaining of outages?

I would say that aside from this and the '05 outage, there haven't been any issues, so why switch providers? 48 hour downtime IS unacceptable no matter how you look at it, but it's very little D/T in the whole scheme of things. People can live without a website for 2 days.

If you switch to another provider, you may well be in the same boat - possibly worse.

I would demand a refund from them (although they aren't legally bound to provide it). Since you're paying them a decent buck as it is, I'm SURE they'd gladly give you a 1 month credit rather than potientially loose you as a customer.

If you want to "do it right", look into co-lo'ing your gear over at 151. It's going to cost an insane amount of money, but there are direct fibre links to every major ISP (as well as a very large number of smaller ones) so access to just about everyone in Eastern Canada and Eastern US would be lightning fast.

For $125 a month, you can get 2U of space, a dedicated T1 connection, 8 IP addresses. Throw in an extra $35/month for every additional "T1"...ie if you wanted T3 speeds, you'd be looking at just under $200.

Of course, you'd have to get your own server and take care of everything hardware/software wise yourself. But, considering how close 151 is to your place, and that you get 24x7 physical access to your rack, that might not be such a bad thing.

Or, you can also colo with Toronto Hydro Telecom or Hydro One Telecom...they have some pretty decent rates as well.

But personally I'd take a look at dealing with 1&1 first.

Tell me if I'm speaking out of turn, but has anyone even considered giving the UER a good dildoing!?

It's got several advantages that I think you'll agree are of use:

1. It's got a kind of buzz about it.
2. It has almost infinite bandwidth.
3. It's cheap to own and run.
4. It supports the multi-connection database schema required by UER*.
5. We don't have to rely on external hosts to colo it.

I think we should at least consider it as an option.

've seen your website and how you run your house... btw... fucking creepy. I'm really shocked that you aren't running this off of your own server. Larger front end investment, but long term savings would be huge, plus you could run all your other projects off of it. It seems like itd be worth it simply for the control, which it seems you LOVE.

Yah, I know he's talking bandwidth. To quote Av, "300-500 GB of bandwidth a month". The 1&1 developer package offers:
5 FREE domain names
300 GB web space
3,000 GB traffic
4,000 e-mail accounts

All tat for $19.99 a month

So yah, if he's paying $150 a month it should include free coffee on a daily basis or sex at least once a month. I was saying I doubt that there is more than 300 GB of data, eg; web site, on UER. 3000 GB of traffic is more than enough to serve the bandwidth of this site.

It would have been a good idea to look at the link before responding to my previous post.

EDIT:

I cleared this up, he has a dedicated server. They obviously cost more.
I still think free sex once a month should be included in the package if the server dies.

I think UER would take out a shared hosting server. Most of those servers are over sold, because the company does not think people will use the max specs of the shared hosting.Plus its not just bandwidth/space its CPU cycles and RAM, UER probably uses a good wad of RAM.

Well, first, there is a huge difference between this community website and your personal website. I ask for donations because this site is by the people, for the people, and it makes sense that the people should (if they can) pay a small part in hosting it.

Second, you obviously don't know what a "donation" is -- a donation is giving without an expected return. If you expect something in return when you donate, that's not a donation, that's a purchase.

With that said, those who do donate DO get something in return -- they know that they have contributed to keeping UER online for at least another month.

UER is far more advanced than a basic hosting plan could offer. UER requires a dedicated server due to the large MySQL database (1.5gb) and plethora of custom plugins and apps that run on the box.

Just ignore the naysayers. Everyone thinks they know better than you.
Very few people who don't know you intimately (not that way, you fucking pervs!) really don't understand what you've put into this place.
